When I first test rode the 800GS I thought that I would need a bigger screen. Now I have TKC80s fitted and I don't go at speeds any higher than 70mphs, the front feels very light otherwise and the sightliest movement on the bars makes the whole bike wobble quite a bit...actually most of my riding is below 60mph anyway.

I thought I would make this comment as I now think the standard screen is perfectly fine on the 800GS considering I will not be riding at more than 70mph and most of my riding is on twisty roads or off-roads. So if anyone is thiknig of buying a bigger screen and fitting some knobblies I would recommend you buying the tyres first!

Maybe because im tall i dont get any wobble problems?.
On the autobahns last year by way of experiment i had it up to 125mph -sat bolt upright, fully loaded with luggage - not that id want to go far like that mind you!- it was more a test of the strength of my forearms than a fair test of the machine, ill leave that sort of riding to the sports or sorts tourers
Other than that ive done alot of motorway miles on mine at 80-90mph, right across europe plus 60 miles a day for work.
you are right ref the std screen, its fine for 60-70mph and back roads etc and the bike itself excels at that sort of thing, i have to use mine for everything though.

Maybe... or maybe it's a problem with my wheels that after a lot of banging need aligning! I won't bother though as I don't normally need to ride at those speeds and I know that if I align them they would be need aligning again in a very short time!

The max speed I did was 110Mph with a pillion (also on the autobahns ) but that was on the BW and I didn't notice any wobble problems.. so I assume that it's the tyres... but it's also possible that its due to the rims... I had to change the tyres due to hitting a sharp rock and splitting the front tyre beyond repair, so the wheel being a bit warped could also be the problem.

Ive just had the er...opportunity to ride home in the rain (30 miles) with the new screen and i must say im very very pleased with how much crud it keeps off me! well done Metal Mule

Hi Moto,

I ride up to 100 miles a day commuting, some motorway M25 or sometimes right into the centre of London A1, A41 etc. I've come from having a V-Strom 650 with a tall screen from MP designs with a Madstad bracket which gave me a really nice clean pocket of air but i could still see over the top. It was also great as with the bracket you could adjust quickly the height and tilt of the screen.

I'm just trying to get something as close to that as possible for my GS as when i did my test ride, it nearly tore my neck off at constant motorway speeds, maybe i've just gone soft behind my old screen!

Maybe Keethy's just a good seller but it seems that the extended touring screen by Eagle seems to be the closest to what i'm after.

Any advice welcome, especially as i haven't even got my bike yet!

Mr.B, if you need a good chimney, then I will live up to your possible assessment of me.....but screens - there's a can of worms.
As has often been opined on these hallowed pages, it's always a bit of a flier buying one as small differences in personal dimensions (& expectations) can turn one person's heaven into another's hell.
Despite not liking the looks of it in the catalogue, I took a flier on Wunderlich's Ergo for my 650 single. It was a revelation - absolutely brilliant. Especially after BMW's crap touring offering. Tried to get one for the twin, but nobody would sell me one (see previous rant).
Still very impressed with the Eagle, though amazingly have still not tried it in heavy rain!

I'm not Keethy, but I have one too so I'll chime in. I'm 6' and I look over the top of it.

It's a superb screen.

I'm only 5' 7'', but still look over the top of it unless I want to see the colour of the cat's eyes that I have just run over!
I generally ride with my visor up (big specs) and find it sooo comfortable.

I'm only 5' 2" but also need the bigger / higher screen on my 650 single as don't like the cold shoulders and head buffeting. One on the way.

Metal Mule

After much deliberation, I have taken the plunge and ordered the tinted screen from Metal Mule. I ordered it late on Monday afternoon and it turned up this morning - 1 day delivery for a 5 quid delivery charge... ... let's hear it for MM.

It's worth noting that it is the same screen as the Powerbronze one but delivery is cheaper... and I'd rather have a MM sticker on the front than a PB one (it's just how I am)

My Bike's in for it's first service at the moment but will report after trying out this weekend (depending on the predicted arctic conditions).

Metal Mule Extended Screen

Put the extended metal mule screen on...







Went out for a ride at the weekend and the screen makes a markable difference. It takes the blast off the chest and as mentioned by others, it does deflect the wind to the top of the helmet. I'm 5'9" (and a bit) and wear a TourX2 and found it to be perfectly acceptable although I didn't do any stella speeds in the prevailing arctic conditions.

No problems with the barkbuster handguards either... can get full lock both ways with a bit to spare.

Removal of old screen and fitting of new done in about 10mins.

Not sure about the rubber trim supplied for the edge so left it off for now.

All in all, IMHO definitely worth 80 sovs of anyones money.

Had these delivered from Nippys this morning so stuck them on a had a spin.
Definitely reduced upper body buffeting but still look a bit odd Probably grow on me.....

Nice touch from Nippys was to supply a drill bit the correct size for fitting
(they need 2 holes drilled each side in the fairing)

I think with most screen and wind protection items different people are experiencing different results so what works for one, doesn't always seem to work for another.

But I've just done a 100 mile round trip to the bike show at the NEC and I can feel the difference. Buffeting around my middle has all but been removed and I can now only notice the wind around my upper arms.

It would seem the Metal Mule screen and Nippys Winglets are the ideal combination for me. (I'm 5'10" with a GSer's midrif !)

What would be the best screen for the GS800. My criteria really is how much wind it keeps off me. I'm about to go and blow nigh on 200 quid on an official BMW touring screen,which I believe also includes the required bracket, so really is this the best choice or would my money be better spent elsewhere, also want a scottoiler and some cheap panniers and or topbox at the very minimum, but not LOADED so a bit price sensitive (yes that means im broke after buying the bike, got it today done 140 miles on it already and extremely impressed, though it may well make me go deaf quite soon, or mad, or both....... (also want a scottoiler too, dont want much do i?????)

Still reckon the best screen is from Nippy Norman, taller and wider that the new BMW touring screen, which i saw fitted at the Bike Show at NEC, no need for extra bracket so at £100 it works for me on all counts!

...Just be aware you can't fit winglets if you fit the TT screen...

...and I bought the proof of that.
