► Alternative screen options

mmm the curved top kills it for me. I'm quite a fan of the 800GS's aggressive styling and part of that is the angular screen. Touratech have paid homage to that with their screen extender and indeed their own larger screen.

For me the elongated screens combined with the BMW beak give it a Marg Simpson look IMHO. The Cee Bailey one I've used as an example here is not so bad. I think I saw an Eagle screen on a 650GS and that was Marg Simpson alright!

That one does look fairly Marg Simson'ish but the Euro version is not so rounded.

I had to make some fairly large cuts in the shield to fit the BarkBuster handguards, but I think it all looks fairly nice and angular now.

you've done a nice job embeedee! :thumb2. I had to cut my Touratech one to fit the Nippy Normans winglet's. Perspecx is actually quite a nice material to work with.

I just noticed... the number of posts... so on that basis I name this "The Devils Post":spitfire

I agree - I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to trim the shield with a Dremel and sanding drum. It's interesting to note that the screen needs quite a bit of modding to make it "right" because the right side actually covers up the headlight screw so if you ever need to adjust the light, you have to remove the shield.

So I ground it like this.

I think the finished product looks better than the unmodified Cee Bailey.

When it's got straight sides it looks dorky. :thumb

Frank,
Have a look here:

They seem to work well with the 800 screen.

I tried a Calsci screen at the weekend. No joy! Lots of protection and fairly quite but too much buffeting around the head.
I've just sent it back!

I might try an 800 screen with the laminar lip - I have a 650.

Hi Tom,

I've got an Eagle screen which is so much better than the stock but still get quite a lot of noise around the helmet. I was going to try a Calsci screen but did it not work for you? I'm 5'11" and have a lowered seat and am just trying to get a quiet bubble of air but without having to look through the screen.

Many Thanx

Mr.B.

Quiet Bubble

I've got the Cee Bailey 20" screen on a 650 with the standard seat height. It produces the "quiet bubble" for me at 6', although I tend to hunch a bit! Slight modifications to the BarkBuster handguards permit full lock-to-lock with light contact on the screen edges.

Hi Mr B,

I've been trying to get a quite bubble of air, both with the 650 twin and my previous 1150 gs but without sucess.
I'm on my third aftermarket screen at the moment but don't seem to be getting closer.
The TT screen worked well in terms of reducing buffetting but was very noisey and directed the windblast to the centre of my visor.
An MRA extension cured noise and wind blast, but introduced buffetting - screen sold!
The Calsci was next. The theory made sense, but again there was too much buffetting around the top of the helmet. Especially at higher speeds. Also, it was very badly finished - the screen edges were unpolished and rough. unacceptable in what is quite an expensive screen. Having said that, Jonathan from Heroblobs was very helpful and had no problem taking it back and refunding my money.
I'm now playing with a 19'' Cee Baily Euro. Well made screen from quite thick plastic. But again buffetting around the helmet - no bubble!

I'm beginning to think it must be my shape. [Or maybe my helmet - System 5.]:confused::confused:

I think the nature of the blasting is important though. Buffeting can be thoroughly unpleasant whilst a nice clean blast is fine.

I think that's exactly the problem. Unfortunately for me i do a lot of commuting on my F800GS and for the motorway part of the journey doing 70mph (honest!) gets tiring if you're getting battered by the wind. Ideally i'd have a bike that magically turns from an 1150RT then back to an F800GS when i get off the motorway!

I've come from having a V-Strom with an adjustable screen which gave me the best of both worlds within a couple of seconds but when i test rode the F800GS, it was just such a laugh to ride, i had to get one. My only problem was the buffeting.

I've only had the F800GS for a couple of months and absolutely love it. I've got no experience of off-roading but hopefully you guys can introduce me to a brave new world! Maybe then i'll get used to the wind!

i have to agree. it's not the wind or being blown about buffeting is different.
i went from a naked bandit 600 to my f800gs and at high speed for long periods of time i find the gs is harder to concentrate on actually driving. i guess there is some sort of turbulance as the air is pushed over the screen and then hits the helmet. its kind of hard to explain, on the bandit i got the full force of the wind hitting me and my head was being pushed back off my shoulders and i enjoyed it, it's all part of the riding experience. but on the gs i get a headache from the noise around the helmet. its not really a loud noise but must be one of those annoying frequency noises. if you know what i mean.

Thank you EmBeeDee. I didn't know that - you live and learn. :eek

Tom. Yes it was the one for the 650GS Fortunately this was a nice flush fit to the GIVI screen tho not to the TT one. I suggest contacting Laminar lip to check it out.
Good Luck.

HTWB, I've just put the Givi screen on and am experiencing the same as you, i.e. much reduced buffeting on the chest, but a lot more noise. I also wanted to attach some winglets but the Givi screen prevents this (without pretty severe 'surgery'!)

I wondered did you ever try the LLip with the standard 650GS screen? I was thinking this, plus winglets could provide a good solution.

Hi Gadge,

Haven't tried the Laminar lip with the original screen yet tho' am meaning to when the weather improves. The laminar lip comes with spare fixing pads by the way.
Hope it works for you.

Hakan,
A couple of pics for you.

Spoiler in high position (lef) and low position (right). There are a couple of intermediate positions as well.

has anyone tried this spoiler with the standard f800gs screen.
would they do an option that looks like the standard screen?

Nippy Normans Screen

Has anyone fitted the £80.00 screen from Nippy's, and if so how well does it work?
Cheers:nenau

'work' is relative to height of rider, type of helmet, riding posture etc. i have it, and it's not perfect. i'm 6'1" and would like something a little higher i think. i want to try others screens on the same bike before i buy anything else though.

I bought this one that you see in the picture from Tom and it works great for me at 5' 7". It really is a personal thing. Tom is one inch Taller than me and it didn't work for him.

Only one way to find out

If it helps, im 6'2" and the metal mule works pretty well for me, bit of wind blast on my shoulders and arms but hey its a motorbike.
In calm conditions (the wind not me) 90mph is comfortable cruise but not very licence friendly, 80mph is maintainable is almost any conditions.
i do about 14k a year so have had plenty of practice:augie
