CalSci Screen

Hi Pete.

Great job with the pic's, thank you:thumb

So how is it with the new screen?

Mark
Hi Mark,
The screen is just right for me, at 6ft. I'm looking over it mostly, there is very little buffeting at helmet level. I can ride with visor up at 100kph and don't need sunglasses or other wind cheating devices!
I suppose the best aspect of it is that I can now hear that lovely engine bark even at Mway speeds or beyond on private roads:augie!
The hole in the screen does seem to reduce the general turbulence and mayhem.
Of all the screens I've tried this is the best. However, you get what you pay for, at 170stg, it's twice the price of the Metal Mule.
Still I'd recommend it.

screen option number 9999....

I bought a BMW tall screen and a Touratech small screen spoiler. The spoiler needed to be heated to angle it up a bit as the BMW screen is raked back at the top but the combination is great on long hauls and you can remove the spoiler if you don't need a tall screen (off road maybe)

Screens n stuff

That's a big screen Pete, I presume the 19in is measured off the top of the main beam cutaway which makes it nearly an inch taller than my Wunderlich. Does the hole work to reduce the effect of the vacuum/noise/buffeting?

No, Lunchbox, the 19in is from top of dipped beam unit, about 20 from main beam unit. I think the key for lads of my height is that it is more upright than other screens. Gives a lot of protection and is further away from the helmet.
As for the hole: air flow around edges seems reduced, balanced by the hole.
As you can see it's also wider which helps.
Sorry I didn't have it for my ride through UK and Spain on run to Portugal though!
Cheers,
Pete:drums

when are you off to Portugal?

Portugal, screens etc etc...

when are you off to Portugal?
Hey ZiPPY,
Was in Portugal in early June, Santander, Spain to Braganca Portugal and then down the eastern border with Spain. Quite remote, lovely B roads, lots of terrific hill towns, great people. Spent week touring down alone, week in Cabanas near Tavira in eastern Algarve and a week travelling home through Picos de Europe in NW Spain. A heatwave, 35C, mean that it was sometimes tough enough!
Can't wait to go again, Portuguese are wonderful!

MRA spoiler

I should have a MRA spoiler up for grabs in the for sale section pretty soon. it is the same one as everywherevirtually has fitted to his TT screen,
i tried this combo but unfurtunately i am not as short as the screen would hope me to be. :nenau:nenauso i may just lower my TT screen a bit.
I know this sounds strange but the TT screen just pushes all air into my eyes so it is either too high or too low to work well:blast

it's better than anything i've tried to date, and i'm very content with it. won't be looking for anything else. 6"1' with a tour X. looks good on the bike too and won't interfere with off-roading.

Any word on how the MRA Vario performs? I need to get a new screen and this one looks to be the most interesting so far...

Hi all.

I had had a M Muel screen after about 8 weeks having taken delivery but was annoyed by the bouncing at the top of it, when at speed and *** awful noise around the helmet and buffeting.:blast

So went back to the standard screen for Aug 09's trip to Spa, using my trusty Arai Viper GT, but over 70 on the Euro M/Ways etc, was a tad loud at times, so opted for another screen when I could afford it.:augie

Today fitted the MRA Vario screen (£107, inc postage) to my 09-F800GS.
In the max setting and on a stock seat (I'm 6') wearing a Hornet DS, it was very quiet from +0 to 60 or so and over on M/Way at 70+ was fine and none to noisy, + no drag on the helmet when doing shoulder checks and looking about that I had on the way back from getting the DS a few weeks back, with the stock screen.:thumb2

PS the DS does offer great overall vision, compared with the Arai, but to be fair, will take some breaking in and time to shape the pads etc.

Hope this helps

Regards

Mark

MRA spoiler on TT screen - everywherevirtually please help!

I have a Touratech screen on my F800GS and it is a good screen but, at 5ft 8in I still get turbulence at visor level. I bought it with this screen on so cannot compare with OE although I may experiment as I have the OE in the garage. I have just got the seat lowered by Dave Harding at Digger Seats and that helps get me down a bit lower out of the blast but I could do with a bit more. Have thought about the TT extender but it looks like it fits the OE screen not their own screen - and it's f-----g expensive.
Then I came across this pic of an MRA Vario on the adventure riders website.

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=406434&page=9

It looks the business but when I found the UK suppliers site (HPS), the Vario tourer they show is quite a bit smaller - I have emailed them about this today. However finding this thread and the earlier post by Aretsukusu, quoting HPS as saying they can supply the Vario spoiler on it's own for £56, makes me think I could fit it to my TT, save £40 and have a taller screen. In fact the photo of the spoiler on the bike in the snow from previous posts looks like it is on a TT screen - can anyone clarify? And could someone who has finally got their MRA Vario from HPS post a piccy please.

I have contacted HPS as well and they confirmed what is above. they sent to me a pdf leaflet with the instructions on how to measure my screen and choose the right spoiler: in fact it is produced in 8 different widths (!).

Hence my request for help to Everywherevirtually!
since you have got the spoiler bolted onto a TT screen, if you could measure the distance between the bolts (the shortest distance, not following the shape of the screen) that would be great!

According to HPS "This distance is the gap between the fastening points on the VTA, and is needed to select the right extension.
If a corresponding model is available in the range, the fastening holes will have to
be drilled into the screen"

I would attach the PDF but dont know how to do it.

Many thanks!
Gianluca

Strange .... I had the MRA Vario and returned it within one week. MG57 did warn be about the Metal Mule screen, but on my recent trip to Denmark it proved to have worked quite well ... this is by far better than all the previous ones I had (Standard, Puig and MRA Vario) .. I am sticking with the Metal Mule one for now, it pushes the air just over my helmet peak ... happy with it so far :thumb

I have done about 11k with the MM screen and found it good for stopping wind and rain on the body but creates alot of turbulance on the top of your noggin. I am 5'7" with a low seat.

Bought the MRA screen and fitting it tomorrow. If it's any good will be selling the MM screen cheap, if it isnt will be selling the MRA.

Will let you know the results.

Few pics as requested of MRA Vario screen.

Cee Bailey 18" Euro Shield

Initially, I too went for the MRA screen.

For me, the problem with the stock 650 screen is the strength of the wind blast on my upper torso, not buffeting to my head.

The MRA screen did reduce the wind blast but not to the extent I was hoping for, so I returned it. (HPS were very good and accepted it back without a problem.)

I then ordered a clear Cee Bailey 18" Euro Shield from Sport Touring.

It's transformed the bike. The wind pressure on my arms and chest is greatly reduced, whilst at the same time there's no buffeting. 70mph now feels like 30 used to.

Everything about the screen oozes quality – the thickness of the material, the perfect fit and finish and the optical clarity of the plastic.

I'm very, very pleased with it. :thumb:thumb:thumb

I should add that I'm Mr Average – 5'10" and medium build.

Now all I need to do is sort out the seat!

Gianluca you are lucky I just happened to have a read in here. Now that I have my screen I don't normally look in this thread.

Zippygser asked me the same question. These are the details I gave to him.

The gap between the two fixtures is 27.5cm.

This leaves 5cm either side at the top of the spoiler and roughly 4cm either side at the bottom of the fixtures.

The spoiler tapers in at the bottom hence the width difference on the outside of the fixtures.

the total width adds up to 37.5cm. It is not that crucial if the fixtures are half a centimetre one way or another.

The spoiler is slightly narrower than the TT screen anyway.

I would also say at the end of the day the human eye is often the best tool for placing something in the right position. :thumb2

CeeBailey screen

Keef800 said about the CeeBailey 18in: "Everything about the screen oozes quality – the thickness of the material, the perfect fit and finish and the optical clarity of the plastic."

The CeeBailey looks very much like the Wunderlich, but exactly how thick is the screen Keef800?
