Wunderlich Ergo Vario update

My first test of the Vario, below, was 2up with Mrs L providing ballast. Riding solo does improve the ergonomics, as the top of the screen at full extension no longer gets in my sightline. This does improve turbulence and noise and makes the screen feel more effective, however I stick to my initial opinion that the improvement over the standard Ergo is not huge.

I have now fitted the NN winglets, which involved a blowtorch and a bit of gentle bending and reshaping of the plastic to fit the screen. I will feedback when I have had a chance to test this setup. This will undoubtedly be my final combination as the only further option would be to fit an MRA spoiler to the Vario and, unless you are over about 6ft 4in, this would be patently absurd.

Its definitely very subjective, screens.. For me and my height the ergo vario is the best of the 5 i have tried out.... FOR ME its at least 100% better than either the stock, MRA, BMW Touring and MM screen.... But as I say... depends on body length, positioning, seat height etc... I now love my bike even more...:ymca

Wunderlich Ergo Vario update

Managed to get out this afternoon for a couple of hours and the winglets definitely make a difference. There is less noise and a bigger pocket of calm air behind the screen. This is the best set up I have used so far (out of 4 - standard, TT, Ergo and Vario). I dare say the winglets would also have improved the Ergo had I put them on then, but I will stick with the Vario for the extra couple of inches and the adjustability.

Wunderlich Ergo Vario update

Had another good blast round the Forest of Dean A and B roads yesterday and the set-up seems to work OK, letting the screen down in the slower lanes is useful, especially in this heat, and raising it on the A roads and motorway. My opinion of the Vario has improved but they really should have used thicker perspex for the lower part to prevent some of the wobble at speed and over bumps. Not perfect but the best solution yet for me hence my old Wunderlich Ergo will shortly be appearing in the for sale section if anyone is interested.

Fitted a cee Baily 18" on my 800 and have been travelling through Europe for the last couple of weeks. Excellent piece of kit!!!

Keeps the air off my chest, relieves the strain from my neck and avoids me getting covered in shite from the spray in wet weather.

Oh yes, as someone else has posted, I can now always hear the growl from the can.

One down side that I've noticed is a slight decrease in acceleration...but then that's possibly a good thing :D

TT option

Been following this thread for 12 months - thought Vario and Desierto too expensive so tried BM touring screen but no good for me, so went back to original. Am 6'1" with standard seat - so very noisy at higher speeds.

Kept looking at loads of options and then went for TT screen with extra extender lip.......transformed the bike! Now goes at 90+ (private roads obviously) no problem with wind blast like before and 100% quieter too. Shakes a little bit on bumpy surfaces at medium speeds, but over 80 the wind actually pushes it back and it gets more solid. Also take the lip off for local and offroad.

Been to Wales and Yorkshire recently, great rides and easy too.

(BTW - loved Forest of Dean, never heard if it before, like Alps but smaller.)

Is this te Desierto screen or something else from TT? I got a bit confused here. I am 6'2'' and am looking for something that might work. I have the standard seat and use the standard 800 GS screen.

My experience is that if I raise my body only 2 - 3 cm when riding 70 mph + I go from hell to heaven. The current setup seems to hit my helmet with maximum wind force (in addition to turbulence). So I need something that is either lower than the standard 800 screen or something that deflects air differently.

It is standard TT screen for 800 on their website - costs about £125 I think. The extra lip costs £90 which looks a lot but I have tried it with and without and for high speeds it makes a big positive difference. (I got the lockable one and it comes off very quickly and goes into a bag.)

Desierto screen costs way more.

I paid about £250 total for both sceens and the front brake cylinder cover.

I would have thought so... probably best to check with NN or have a looksee on the wunderlicker :augie website first....

Did i say I loved my screen?

Fitted mine today :thumb

Marvellous, bloody marvellous...

I have had one on my F650 since December. Also low saddle and short legs. Works for me and easy to fit.

I had gone though standard, touring, MRA (on trial), Ergo and finally the Ergo Vario. I have some pics in the screen thread somewhere showing the screen in different positions, but the one above is good.

When I go off road I just take the top section off completely (takes a couple of minutes). Because the full screen is quite tall, if the bike goes down on its side in a lane with steep sides or bushes the top of the screen can get caught if its fully extended. See pic with top removed.

In the recent hot weather it's been great to lower the top screen and catch the breeze.

Here is the link to my postings on the alternative screen thread, which shows the screen fully up and down. You can also take the top section right off as I mentioned above.

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146804&page=17

All measurements below are from the top of the bigger headlamp on the 650GS twin.

Fully up - 17.5 inches

Releasing catches to lower screen (Takes about 6 secs)- 15 inches

Also loosening four screws on front to lower screen to bottom of sliding rails. Just under 13 inches. (Takes less than a minute.)

Take out the same 4 screws to remove top section completely - 9 inches

Thks for the link & the measurements.
It's indeed tall once full up ! 1 1/2" higher than my TT + Mra screen, good thing that you can take it apart easily

If anyone is interested I have a brand new one, still in the box from NN.

My current Vario got a few scratches on it while it was being transported by a recovery service. The recovery service paid for a new one which I was going to fit when I sold the bike, but that may be some way off. If I sell the screen I can put the money towards a new end can.

Tempting but pricy from the suppliers....I have the power bronze one and its been ok but not fantastic. This Vario looks like it does what it says on the tin...
