► Bashplates, crash bars and other protection

Well, I guess it's "protection". Here's the Gezagear cover I just bought:

Not cheap and I got 'stung' for VAT and Import Duty on it too but seems to be very well made and will hopefully protect the bike from the worst of the weather.

not meaning to be funny but it hardly covers any of the bike. I got a cheap £14 cover fro Argos and it covers the entire bike down to the ground :augie

Yup. Those tyres need a lot of protection.

yeah, I suppose you're right. I used my cover a lot in the the first few weeks of getting the bike more to hide it than protect it. The car park where I live is similar to yours and a few bikes got nicked. It turned out that there were a gang of car and bike thieves living in the same apartments and they were using it as a store. The police came round and found 9 stolen cars.

It did turn out to be a very expensive buy but it does the job for me.

Anyone knows if Hepco & Becker's Engine Guards can be fitted to a F800GS with BMW's Large Engine Alu. Bashplate?

The BMW's Engine Protection Guards are almost double that of H&B's one.
quite rediculously priced!

hey snowlife_9999

I really want to get my bike ready for spring (i take delivery at the end of Oct in Australia). I think that the higher crash bars are best, but not sure where to order them from.

Any help? (In or outside Australia)

SW-Motech stuff is available from Motorrad Garage here in Perth.
http://www.motorradgarage.com.au phone (08) 9444 6807.
I spoke to Michael today, I'm getting crash bars, bash plate and Quick-Lock EVO Side Carriers, all by SW-Motech. He has it all in stock.
I may end up modifying both the bash plate and the side carriers, depending on how they work out.
regards

pete

SW Motech work well.

After my 650 decided to demonstrate its advanced knowledge of applied physics (i.e. Gravity), I can personally attest to the efficacy of the SW Motech crash bars, at least when not moving.:o

On the left, Slight markings on the top of the crash bars, the end of the clutch lever and the mirror just touched the ground with absolutely no damage.

Paid for themselves in less than a week.:thumb

thanks,
will have a look and find out weather it is cheaper to order within/out of australia. Currently i think Denmark is the cheapest to order from re:sw-motech crash bars. If my memory is correct, $230-235 inc postage

wtf, no pix

WTF mates. Ok i have studied this threat religiously. But i have never seen this (bash plate). Even tonight i went through the 8 pages to double check that i had not missed something. (maybe :blast will result)

I ask of you all...esp bluebird2007 (hope that is right). what is the brand? country? Cost?

I quite like it in comparision to the BMW plate. And we all know that BMW over charge.:rob
....

look have been trying to get the pic posted for the last hour... given up... well they are on a thread on advrider.com.(south africa) (guy on 800gs girl on 650gs)

i will try to post soon (1day) if you have not answered my questions (pics) before hand..
Thanks

Snow:

I am not 100% sure, but I think it is a custom design done in South Africa and not available as a commercial item...

I think I read an append by BB saying that... :augie

MY BMW supplied bashplate got a bash this last w/e. It's not surprising, as I was going over some rocky Welsh stuff at the time. What does surprise me though is that a weld split. A welded seam just cracked along about an inch of weld. The bashplate itself doesn't seem to have been bent or otherwise distorted and I do think it protected the exhaust headers which are slightly scratched - presumably from the bashplate contacting them.

Now I wonder whether I should get the thing rewelded or whether it's a warranty thing that I should complain about. Someone told me that that unlike most metals, ally gets softer when welded and it shouldn't crack. I have no idea frankly but do feel a bit pissed off that the thing didn't just bend a bit.

Makes me wonder if I should commission one in SS? OK, it would be heavier but only a pound or two.

so, my powder-coated BMW alloy bash plate/sump guard has cracked along one of the welds. of course my local dealer is going to tell me that i've hit it on something and so it's cracked. if they offer to replace it, i'm going to ask for a refund and buy an aftermarket one because i don't think they're as good as some of the other variants.

Mine has done the same thing - I haven't yet talked to the dealer but shall be doing so soon. I believe they should bend rather than crack if they hit something.

Let you know about the HB bars and BM plate when my bars get here :aidan

What great bars

I think the protection bars on the mr & mrs pictures are amazing. My biggest bug bear is that things should look like they fit with the bike. These imho, are the best designed thus far :thumb2
My next question is now that everywherevirtually has found them :thumb, where the hell can you get that bash plate from ???????
Also, at 231 quid, they are expensive but boy do they look like they'll happily do the business.

Slightly off topic here but are those the hard alpos alu cases on the side that were available from bike bitz for 404 quid all in ??

When at the Touratech Travel event I noted that a lot of the F800GS's had damage high up.

Judging by the videos of the off road school the likelihood of bikes ending up in ditches, tree stumps and upside down is high.

For me personally I'll be going for Wonky's bars. I had long chat with him at the event and was impressed by the effort and attention to detail they are going to. When these bars come out they will be worth the wait and price :rob

yes, i'm dumping my givi crash bars for that very reason. i'm hoping wonky's come with light mount possibilities on them. do you have any inside knowledge on whether this is true?

Why? Did you drop the bike and you are not happy with them?
I was sure Givi bars would not allow the plastic around the radiator to touch the lever ground. The bike should stand on Givi and handlebar in that case.
And Givis seem to protect the legs/feet of a rider, which is more important than piece of plastic, imho.
