Tutoro chain oiler, will it work????

I took delivery of a Tutoro manual chain oiler yesterday and fitted it last night to my F650GS. It is simple and little to go wrong, as far as i can see. Took a little thought as to the best way to mount it, and the best way to run the delivery tube to the rear sprocket.

Rode to work this morning, so early days yet. It is a neat fit and seems to do the job. It will take a little while to properly tune the oil flow rate, but there ain't a lot to do, other than twiddle the knob:eek:ymca

You get a bright orange sticker to put near the igintion switch to remind you to turn it off, after a ride. The worst that could happen however is you forget and get a small puddle of oil under the bike.

I will update with progress for them what's intrested

I got mine on yesterday. It seems to be pretty good. At first I had it at the top of the chain, but it was going making an oily mess in the front spocket guard if I left it there.

So I put it down near the rear sprocket.

After a few longish rides Im still adjusting the drip rate. I had too much to start with, but it seems just about right now, I will just have to keep an eye on it for a while.
I dont know what oil other people have been using, but I got a cheap bottle of Castrol EPX 80W-90 gearbox oil to use with it. The Tutoro website suggested that oil rating.

Sprocket bolts sizes

8 or 10mm? 2010 GS 800, ordering new and nowhere near the bike to measure up.

Thanks in advance

I had a problem with this on a 2009 (59) 658 - the website i ordered off had this year of bike using 10mm carrier bolts whereas mine was on the 8mm bolts. Not sure which is the earlier or later version so i would get someone near the bike to check manually before ordering.

Chain and sprocket replacement advice

Hi all
I have a 2009 F800GS and the front sprocket and chain need replacing so i am thinking of fitting a DID,s X-Ring Gold Plate Chain and a smaller front sprocket to lower the gearing for off road while i,m at it.
I have not been riding that long so would appreciate if some advice.

Firstly how many teeth does the original sprocket have and does a smaller one which is preferential for off road simply have one less tooth.

Secondly i have been looking online and i think the correct spec chain is a
DID's X-Ring Gold Plate 525 VM2 120 link, is this correct and does the front sprocket size have any bearing on what chain to use.

And finally how difficult would this be to fit this myself ?
(Are there any pitfalls ?)

Thanks for taking the time to read this
Any help would be greatly appreciated

The chain sounds right. I use the D.I.D 525 VXGB 120 link chain. The OEM one is shite.

The sprockets are a doddle to change, I recently done mine myself for the first time. No special tools needed just spanners and or sockets.

To change the chain yourself you'll need a chain tool to break the old chain (unless you cut it off with a hacksaw or dremel, or remove the swing arm, which my BMW dealer did once). You'll need the tool to flare the rivets on the chain's new master link, unless you use a split pin master link, which I've heard can be done by hand.

You can get the chain tool online quite cheap, the heavy duty DID one is the best for garage use. I have a travel one from Terra-X which is tiny and pretty good. There's loads of how-to videos online. Be gentle riveting the master link, its easy to over do it and end up with a tight spot.

One less front tooth on the front sprocket shouldn't alter the chain size - correct adjustment of chain tension would take care of any excess slack if any.

Good luck. :thumb

The correct chain length is 116 links. The standard sprocket is 16 tooth, and you can get 15 tooth. Need tools and may be some one to help that had done it before to walk you through.

Correct. My mistake, apologies. The last chain I got was a 120 because it was on sale... I just trimmed it down.

Sorted

My thanks to you Steve and Roy, your advice was very helpful.

I eventually got the 15 tooth front sprocket from Touratech UK for £27.41 delivered.
And the chain was £94.60 from A and R racing. The guy at A+R was very knowledgeable and i ended up getting DID'S 525 (VXGB) X-Ring Gold 116 Link as it is a newer version of the (VM2).

Thanks again for your input guys.

The original chain gave me over 40,000kms of trouble free service and still had some life left in her.
Cleaning and lubing will do that. I replaced mine with a Regina endless and took the opportunity to lube the swingarm set up.
Again, preventive maintenance. Where I ride I dont leave things to chance.

Mike, i,m not going to lie to you it was totally down to my poor admin. I have had a stern word with myself and promise it will not happen again.
Am i grounded ?

chain and sprockets

Hello all, sorry if this question has been asked but i'm struggling to find an awnser. I need to change my chain and sprockets on my 08 f800gs and i want to fit a 17t front sprocket. Can i but the full chain and sprocket set for the 650 and will it fit front and back. There seems to be 2 different bolt sizes for the rear sprockets. Can anyone shed some light. I went to local bmw dealer today and they had no clue.

Bikewize:

Yes parts should be interchangable from F800GS to F650GS, but you do need to make sure the rear sprocket has the correct size mounting holes. Early bikes with 8mm studs, later bikes with 10mm.

Cut over point was fuzzy, I think sometime in 2011 ...
