► Exhaust options/problems and CAT

For my trip to Mongolia I removed the cat and i let the guys from BMW remap F800 for RON 91 (95 before), because of bad fuel in russia / mongolia.

When u remove the cat, u don t have to remap for leaded fuel. The only thing is, if there wil be 95 or 91 available.

I wanted to have my bike remapped to RON 80, but BMW said 91 is minimum...

In mongolia was only RON 80 / 76 available, BMW survived that :) 4000 km on 80 RON gasoline without problems...
 
remus makes the pipes without the cat, so u don t have to remove the cat, just buy the pipes and change them for original ones.

Or i can sell u original pipes without cat (removed by BMW). There was no Remus option when i was leaving to mongolia in June. I purchased complete Remus Hexacone system last week :)
 
...of course bike works better with KN air filter (Blue filter from Wunderlich) if cat is removed...

If you're still wondering about the levers, yes I'd recommend them, but it depends on how you value things! I love them, they give better feel and control to the levers what with these arthritic wrists'n hands of mine. They look bloody great, and are quality bling :thumb

There would be those who disagree ... that is their choice of course :spank

BMW Akro quieter than standard exhaust but nice deep sound to it. Now ride with the baffle removed, not noisy at all but great sound to it. Just done 4,000 mile round trip to Morocco... no probs. Lot lighter and better looking than stock :thumb

Sorry if I missed your report on Morocco - how was it?
The bike? In the mountains - any power loss? Low grade fuel - if any?

Hi Easyman ... no probs with the fuel in Morocco for sure. Bike ran like a dream, it's only prob being the tosser on board :eek:

The bike certainly better at the game than me ... for sure :thumb

Travelled through Russia a couple of years ago.... loved the place and the people, wanna go back :)

to BMW GR. I have an F800 GS and mine does the same. Mine has only got 800 miles on it but its still noticable, especially if you rev it hard and then listen for the vibration on the over run. If you are gonna rev it hard for the engines sake please dont do it from cold, leave it a few mins running time to circulate the oil...
 
No Rattle

The exhaust on my F650GS (Twin) does not rattle or move sideways.....there is definately something wrong with yours. :comfort
 
Mine moves, its rubber mounted and the silencer is held on to the pipe with 2 big springs, its designed for off-road I’m sure its meant to move.

I'm not worried :)
 
Sounds pretty normal to me. Mine move from side to side as well. You need some play in the system for when you are travelling over the rough stuff.

I'd say the one that is rigid and not moving is the one with the problem :rob
 
yep mine is the same went to bmw today and looked at show room model and second hand they had and it does the same, if it was rigid it would start breaking welds according to the technician.
 
Yes...mine is rubber mounted too, and yes it has springs to hold it on....but it does not rattle nor move excessively sideways and neither do any of the ones I've looked at in dealers here.
 
The Cat & Leaded fuel?

OK .... I need to ask some advice of those of you who have far more techical knowledge/understanding than me!

Hope to be riding an 800GS overland next year and for a significant part of the trip ..... unleaded fuel will NOT be available. Spent quite a while trawling around the forum on this one ....... Jarex has already posted about removing his Cat and having BMW remap the bike's computer from 95 - 90 octane for his trip to central Asia. He reported having run his 800GS on 80 octane leaded for around 2000K ..... it didn't like it too much ..... but he had no significent running problems.

The questions I have for you all are:

Removing the Cat from the 800Gs appears not to be quite as simple as on my previous 1150GS ...... Jarex talks about cutting through the pipework and rewelding after removal of the cat! Anyone else attempted this? Is this the only way to go?

Would there be any harm / ill effects to the bike after returning to unleaded fuel .... running without a Cat & having had the bike remapped from 95 to 90 octane?

Any info / advice / observations from those of you in the know would be much appreciated.

You can buy aftermarket exhaust pipes without cat (www.remus.com), but my journey started too early, so no aftermarket solution was available, i had to improvize :) Also pipes are not cheap fun :(

I already have purchased remus system Hexacone, so my old original pipes with cat removed are available for reasonable price. If interested, send me message. Means u can change the pipes just for your trip, and when home use your original ones with cat and without problems with local law :)

I won t need my old pipes any more. Remus is expensive, bud sounds great :)
 
...second question... no problem with unleaded fuel without cat, of course.. the only change is that engine gives more power and more noise :)
 
I haven't investigated thoroughly yet but recently my local dealer's service manager mentioned that the CAT is metal rather than ceramic so it would be OK to use a tankful of leaded should the need arise.
