► Exhaust options/problems and CAT

Nice looking bit of kit- don't know why I didn't find it when I was looking!cos I was looking for something black :blast - but I did find this Blue Flame stainless oval twin pipe with removable baffles. I've left the bottom plug in place, cos otherwise it's just a bit too noisy. As it stands it has a cracking 'rasp' when under load and really seems to let the engine breathe.

Wore my Tour X3 for the first time in a year rather than my usual Davida Classic Jet. The noise from the new can was noticably LOUDER !!!!!!!! :eek:

I'd forgotten what a crap helmet the Tour X3 is. Give me open face every time :thumb2

:beer: I apologise in advance as I've just returned from the pub via the Chinese, anyway I find it strange that people are amplifying an exhaust note that IMO is a bit naff / bland / German.
Its a mint ridable bike (i own one) and as a person that has always thrown away the original end can to make it louder I wish I could make it quieter as its a pants exhaust note IMO. then again I am getting older, hence the F800 and in bed by 2200hrs (surfing the web). spend the money on tauratech goodies (that you don't really need to buy but individualism is +++++).
Triumph triple yeah give it loud. flat twin boring bark keep it quiet (flat as in note). IMO. :beer:

I quite like the standard sound. Mind you that didn't stop me going down the Akro route (lighter, plus maybe a few more ponies). A standard Akro (db killer in place) is quiter than the the stock exhaust.

Only problems are my missus complains of a sore head after riding pillion and I got it back from a service last week and there was a note on the 'Advisory' slip that the exhaust was 'Loud' !!

In the market for a exhaust they will do something, dual valve is great if ti is active, open a valve, easier air flow/more power, =higher power and noise out of test range. In an after market not so much (generally). But you will have to check for yourself.
General benefit, more sweet sound, more power in the mid, more poise! Non-tuned after market exhaust

Hmm. Sounds like a bad experience. I went up to their factory shop and got a can that was ever so slightly marked (on the bike side) for £100 which was a bargain. And that included fitting.

Having said that, even with the baffle in, I find the can gets a bit loud and annoying at 70+ over long distances, even with ear plugs in! It does sound great at lower speeds though. I recently put a big dent in it and I think its got even louder so I am on the look out for an alternative that doesn't break the bank or my eardrums.

The Leo Vince and Scorpion offerings look good, but it's hard to tell the volume when listening on You Tube. Don't mind paying £250-£300 this time.

The Akro sounds good - I don't mind quiet - if I can get one at the right price.

specially made units, that were made for a 25th Anniversary 1200 GS twin Hence the color.The guy only made 2 sets and sold them on ebay.
As i have u/s hands / arms these are great as they are open and easy to get on with, unlike others were you have to put yer hands in..

I have a pair of tri-oval Beowulf cans on my Diversion 900. They look great, but were VERY boomy(sp?) around town and LOUD. I simply fitted a large outlet chromed steel dB killer into each side and its all great. The noise is mellow but not too much.
 
Exhaust De Catting to see what the difference is.......

I decided to try de catting my 800 exhaust after having done it on my 1200 to what the difference was and i am happy to say wow it makes even more difference on the 800 than it did on the 1200.

I started by taking the exhaust off and cutting it open where it was originally welded up to gain access to the cat and proceeded to remove it using my drill, a chisel and my belt sander to smooth it all out allowing better gas flow which is what it is all about.

Once I had done this I proceeded to tig weld it all up as you get a better seal with a tig opposed to a mig, once it was all welded up i painted it with high temp paint to ensure that it all blends in and looks good.

I then took it out for a ride and I have to say wow what a difference, it pulls from nothing much better and rides much better, oh and sounds just that bit sweeter.

So if any one wants it done to theirs for a small fee please don't hesitate to give me a shout.

I was just saying to thomo57 that I was considering doing the same thing. My thought was to actually replace the cat "bulb" with a straight pipe, but having seen your solution I think it'd be much easier to do it your way.
How did you get the pipes to align up perfectly afterwards? Especially making sure the length of the pipe wasn't altered?

Hi Guys

Many thanks for your comments, i managed to get them to align using that old method of a marker pen and a welding rod to in-between the faces to get then to sit just right, then used masking tape to hold it together whilst I tacked a couple of welds on before going to town with the tig.

As I said more than happy to do the work for you for a small fee.
