Space for autocom

Hi
I'm collecting my new 650 GS on Friday :D. I had a call from the dealership this morning saying they could find absolutely nowhere to fit my autocom other than next to the battery which bothered me a bit as it's going to be tricky to get at. However, looking at what everyone else has said + the very helpful picture, I realise this must be the only solution. It should be OK once the settings are sorted out.

Best wishes,
Kate

Do tell more about your impressions of the bike (and pics!!) when you get it, I have to wait at least another month at least before I get to see mine....:tears meanwhile this place will have to do :thedummy

Autocom

Yeah my bike has the alarm, so had to find a place for it. Apart from the fact it is under the cover I feel that spot next to the battery was designed for an autocom. I am sorry I have no photo,s yet.

Fitting my alloy sump guard and tail box / pannier tonight, looks real easy apart from coding the lock for it.

I love this bike so far but only done a few hundred miles mostly in the wet.

I have been lucky to own a few other GS models last one being a 1200GS. So far I feel that the little GS is good but it is a budget bike compared to the 12, price alone tells you that. But the real test will be when I load up for a weekend away. On the 12 you really don,t feel the extra weight, (PAX and Luggage) time will tell.

What else, em, roll on some nice dry roads over Easter.

When I took the demo bike out I had the seat off and there was space in the tail piece. I think this might be where the alarm would go if you had it fitted. I assume that means there must be power back there to?
I pick my bike up tomorrow so I can take a picture unless anybody else beats me to it.

Cheers
Ian

GPS mount for F800GS

When I went to fit my GPS to my 800GS I realised how useful that cross brace was on the 1150 handbars - made adding things like the GPS so much neater (imho). I wanted to get the GPS on 'straight' if you know what I mean not hanging off a stork on one side so the obvious place was the centre of the bars but they are pretty wide - 1.1 inches. The american RAM site claimed their handlebar mount would do 1 to 1.1 inches so I gave it a go.

It's a bit of a stretch but it does fit albeit with a longer bolt - anyway it's in the centre of the bike and it cost me all of £4.99 so I'm happy :D

Looks good . I cant see how i would be able to use that base with the Zumo cradle though and can't find an adaptor.

I thought the ZUMO came with a RAM mounting kit? I assume from what you are saying it's not the standard RAM diamond mounting point (or even hole spacing) on the back of the ZUMO mount? Bit of a shame if that's the case as I'd quite like a ZUMO but as there is nothing wrong with the NUVI at present that's some way down the list - next priority if to get some panniers sorted.

The Zumo does come with a mounting kit, but its a long ,double jointed affair and your set up is more direct/neater. The cradle for the zumo has 4 mounting holes, all of which can be used with the kit that comes as standard and two of which may line up with the diamond holes you have i guess but that's not ideal .

GPS set-up

Thanks for the example of the central RAM mount IanT61. I've a Garmin Zumo which does come with the 'stork' and I'm not so sure I want to have my GPS orbiting up away off my handlebars. Where you've placed it seems ideal and I'm wondering if there's anyone else who's managed to get a zumo down nearer the instruments and if so how? From some of the photos, it seems like most have put their Zumo's on the stork as per the Touratech catalogue - does it work ok there?

Finally, apparently the bloke at the dealership was saying connecting the GPS directly to the battery has knackered some of the engine software on the Adventure's. Has anyone tried this yet on the 800 or are most using the canbus?

Thanks in anticipation...

You can use a 3inch Ram arm (longer one than comes with the Zumo) and a standard bar mount. Put the mount as close to the center of the bars as you can, and mount the arm horizontally.

Or you can fit a Renthal crossbar and use the mirror/bar mount & 3 inch arm to put the Zumo above and to the left of the clocks. Plenty of visibility, and it's still protected by the screen.

Or get a BMW touring screen (when it appears) and use a Padge mount.

Or wait for Migsel to come up with summit.

Thinks youre stretching the RAP-274 and IMV its not ideal as its more suited to the pedal pushers. To do it properly, try RAM-B-149ZA with metal and ball joint parts... but what do I know:augie

Will that mount on a 28mm bar?

Or, more to the point, is the 231Z the 30mm version?

This is helpful, thanks lads. It seems the 231Z comes with 2 'U' bolts, one which fits a 1" bar and one which fits up to 1.25" (ie., 31.25 mm), so the latter seems it'll fit. It's not quite as direct a fit as the Nuvi in the photos above, but it's not far off and saves messing around with cross-braces etc whilst keeping the Zumo central and behind the screen, but out of the way of the instruments. For £8.99 there'll be one ordered in the morning.

It's not perfect I agree but works well enough with something as light as the Nuvi. Worst that's going to happen is that it will twist on the bar. Saying that it survived a very pot holed track I went down at the weekend - got to love that 21inch wheel but that's anther story :D.

Would be interested to hear if RAM have a u bolt that fits the wider bar as I couldn't see anything obvious on the net. I want to keep the GPS as low as possible on the bars so its out of harms way. I have a bit of a plan for an upgrade as some point especially as it seems the zumo mount wont fit. I've found some 30mm stainless U bolts and I'm going to make a plate out of black acetal as I've notice a few places on fleebay selling offcuts quite cheap.

Let us know how you get on Si as I am warming to the Zumo as it has a powered mount - it's a bit of a pain having to plug the power into the Nuvi seperatly as the RAM mount doesn't provide any juice.

Ian

Have you got a link for the 231z Si? Cant find anything myself which shows the 2 U bolt size

Edit: no worries, i see you have to add to basket to see that info.

FWIW ... RAM-B-231Z u-bolt mount mounts and shall include RAM-B-149Z and its versions such as camera mounts are now being shipped with two u-bolts, one 1" and one 1.25", so its sorted :thumb

Same mount for me - the standard stuff supplied with TomTom Rider V2.

Plug is temporary until I can get hold of a can bus part.
