► Hand Guards, handlebars, risers and levers

Yes, I have the 2008-09 R1200GS handguards on my F650GS twin. There's less likelyhood of vibration problems as you retain the original bar ends. If I remember correctly they are also cheaper.

Tim

Plus they actually protect your mittens from the elements....

Another silly question, Tim...

Does the 08-09 R1200GS have the same handlebar diameter as my F650GS twin (ie 22mm?), only I read earlier in this thread about your using some tape to pack out the mounting clamp - so they are a correct fit, and not a bodge?

Ta,
Ade.

Look at that, 10 months on, and I've gone for the Barkbuster 'guards, on the basis that they're designed to fit the 650 twin, rather than an ad-hoc retro-fit.

Bit of care needed with routing the throttle cable (I've been hurt by sticking throttles in the past...) and positioning to miss the tank while on full lock, and they're on! Work fine with the Metal Mule screen, as well. :)

Barkbuster vibes?

Hi all.

I'm planning on getting some Barkbuster handguards in the next couple of days as the weather gets colder. I thought I would check to see if anyone had increased bar vibes after fitting them. They seem to be a popular choice.

They are going on Renthal Fatbars on my 650 twin. I'm guessing I won't be able to use my current bar end weights.

I'm replacing the original BMW guards, one of which got slightly bent after an off in the Peak. They won't fit my Fatbars and they were not that great for wind protection either. The top of my hands always caught the chill.

Cheers. Malc

Hi Malcolm,

Sorry to go off-topic a bit, but I'm pondering slightly lower bars (just as I had on my R1200GS), and was thinking of getting some FatBars. How did you fit the heated grips and all the other switches and things? On the R1200GS I had to drill a hole and carefully tap it for the clutch side heated grip. Also, why don't the OEM BMW handguards fit the FatBars? Thanks and sorry for the sidestep!

First off I fitted risers that converted from the 7/8 bars on the 650 twin to the larger diameter Fatbars. My tyre man actually drilled the two holes required to secure the left grip and BMW had supplied me with a couple of self-tapping screws that went straight into the alu bars. The bars are tapered so although they are fat in the middle, by the time you get to to the ends, they are the same diameter as the originals.

Brilliant! Thanks! Pretty much how I did it on the R. I didn't have FatBar brand bars on the R, so the diameters were all the same. :)
How come the OEM BMW handguards don't fit if they're the same diameter at the ends?
Thanks again!

The end of BM original bars is threaded to take their own bar end weights, which are cut to accept the handguard. People have got round this problem by using oversized rawlplugs when fitting onto the Fatbars.

I used a short length of hose pipe as a rawlplug, which just about worked, but because one of the guards was bent from impact it was all a bit skewed. Plus the bars start to fatten up at the point where the other end of the guard clamps on, which made things awkward with clamps designed for the original bars.

I was hours away from a big trip while I was wrestling with all this, so I just ditched the guards. Not a problem when the temperature is 38C, but I'm feeling the difference now on the frosty mornings.

Just realised the Storm is single point fitting so offers no crash protection. I'll stick with the VPS model.

You know what, Malcolm.. I used rawplugs in my R-bars too. I had actually forgot it. I cut the OEM bar ends down using a bolt though them, then putting them on a drill and clamping the drill onto the bench and then cutting the bar end weights with my hacksaw.

It's all flowing back to me now. Brilliant. Thanks very much! :)

Got that wrong! I see Adventure Spec is offering the Storm with the VPS backbone. I would guess the clearance should be the same, re not fouling the windscreen. Might go for the Storm as they offer more weather protection.

Anybody tried the wunderlich handguards for the original steel bars? The standard ones are crap when the weather gets cold. At £49 from Nippy they sound like a bargain - but do they walk the walk? Got the originals with TT extenders on my 650 single, which are brilliant.

Anyone got the Barkbusters 'Storm' guards on their F800GS?

Can't decide between them at £26 or a proper set of muffs from Val at £46...

Hi,

Has anyone fitted 1200 GS hand guards with Touratech high screen? I have the stock 800GS hand guards but want more protection and I am not sure this combination will work.

Cheers

Leggy

Val's muffs are the dog's bollocks...
Riding with summer gloves & heated grips on low, is really comfy...

My bike went into NOG for service, yesterday, and I took out a loan bike, it made me really appreciate how good the muffs are, along with the other bit's I've added - touring screen, Hyperpro progressive springs & comfort seat.

Not quite what you're asking, but I've got 1200GS handguards with the BMW Touring Screen, all fine.
