Cheers

1200gs handguard

I know this have been covered allot but I tried searching with no luck!

I want to fit 1200gs guards to my 650gs twin, which year is the best to fit?

Thanks for your help!

I'm not sure how the 650 differs. I bought my 800 in mid 2009 and fitted the same handguards as the new 1200GS in the showroom at the time. My 800 is grey/black (the quick ones), and I chose the handguards to suit.

Cheers for the reply, the only problem that may occur is the 650gs bars are thinner than the 800. But Im sure some bodge could be attempted! :)

Be aware that there has been a change to the clutch lever base assembly that means it protrudes further from the bars than on earlier F650GS. If using 1200 handguards, a spacer (half inch worked for me on a 2010 F650GS) needs to be made to fit between the handlebar clamp and the inner mounting surface of the guard. Easy to do, but necessary.

Oops, forgot to answer original question. 2008 onward works fine, apart from the mods needed for the non tapered bars on the 650, and the spacer needed for late model 650s. 2008 onward also has removable top pieces for summer, or the much bigger top pieces can be bought from Nippy if you need extra wind/rain protection.

Thanks for the advice mate, just what I needed. I should be alright to fit as my 650gs is a 09. She just ticked over 21.000 miles yesterday! :beerjug:

Just for reference's sake, what is the approximate all-in cost of the 1200 handguards? It looks like on this side of the pond, they are over $200! :eek

Apparently the really expensive bits are the (slightly too large) clamps, which are about $70 each. They don't half know how to charge, do they? Anybody found any significantly cheaper alternatives?

From memory, they were about £75 - £80. So, just over $110.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I have ordered the 1200gs hand guards. They should be on the bike sometime next week!

Cheers :beerjug:

I have to say, it looks nice. But is it really worth the £554.34 their asking for it? :nenau

Val.

Sorry Val. H I genuinely did nort see your post as I do not subscribe to the message email thingy to say some one has added to the thread that you have posted.

(I just came here to post a question about Handguards)

Thanks and I agree it does look nice :thumb and from your post date thay have frozen the price :beerjug:

like all things is it worth it, It is the best screen I have owned and in 3 years I have purchased 4 including the one it came with :blast the F800gs standard I purchased was the biggest waist of money I have spent on my bike I think it was 45mm ish taller than the F650gs :nenau
the givi I had was good, but this is the best the 4 way movement and cock pit with surround (which some paint :D) and tinted upper seals the Deal

not many appear on Ebay.

The item in question is simple You either buy it and have one or you do not.

Hand guard help required

Hand guard question.

I have F800GS hand guards can the plastic of the bark busters fit ?

the BMW's are great lever protectors with metal brace through out but even with spoiler the height is at the grips.

I was trying to just buy the plastics not the whole kit!

or do others fit over the BMW bar-Kit-metal work?
Renthal, TT, any known ? :nenau

I do not fancy the glow in the dark plastic

Just want Black or black n blue or some decal Kit any Ideas please ?

I got the BB's on my 650. The metalwork that they fit onto is flat bar ally whereas from what i've seen the BMW guards fit onto cylindrical tubing?

Also no decals - the bb's have another colour plastic injection moulded to give the sign across the front.

Shout me back I'll do some picks and measurements if you'd like.

Hi Smythson,

Thank you for your post and explaining that the BB's are Flat Bar so that answers my question :thumb2

If you have a picture of the BB's on your 650 please put it up :D :D

At the moment the top of the spoiler on my BMW 8 guards is between centre and top of grips which is great lever protectors but my poor knuckles out in those elements :blast

BB's on 650...

I was just thinking mine are probably not the best example - i don't like too much in the way of advertising so cut off the lettering (even with a sharp chisel it was hard work!) Albeit smooth after removal the injection channels were still visible, in white plastic, so i covered them with a strip of black Scotchlite / 3M reflective tape. Also i have the additional wind deflectors attached (just two screws in the back of the guard) -

The bar is 10mm x 20mm in profile and has two tapped holes for plastics to be secured by screws from the outside edge -

They are attached centrally by these clamps -

And when i was talking about injection molded type graphics...

I like these because of the styling and the fact it is a robust setup, very fit for purpose in terms of wind, lever and spill protection. Also spares are easy to come by should there be any real testing involved :augie
