F650gs touratech 35 set...

If you are moving from a F650gs (2001) touratech 35 liter setup...it is 1022 wide 40.25"...That is what I am used to so that size is a good reference for me..and maybe others....

Fitting the ignition key to the Vario Topa Case

I plan on getting the Vario Top Case for an F800GS. Since I'll get the case before I get the bike, I'm planning on buyingthe key-less cylinder lock and later retro-fitting it to use the ignition key.

Has anybody done this?

Is it an easy job?

Top Case

I have done it it's fiddly and a pain to do, I'd get the dealer to do it for you.

It's one of those things if you do it 5-10 times it takes 5 mins do it once and it take 3 hrs.

I'm getting the bike delivered in September from a local dealer. Top case, carrier, locks and R1200GS handguards coming in from a US dealer.

I'm gonna need to do this myself :(

Pictures of the Vario Top Case on an F800GS

Any one got any pictures of the Vario Top Case mounted on an F800GS?

Extended and reduced?

Genon,

That's exactly what I was looking for... Thanks for the pics:aidan

Tip,

Mine isn't coming in until late September, maybe even until October. In the mean time I've watched thousands of pics and lots of videos: Living vicariously :P

I already ordered the case, carrier, locks (to set with ignition key), backrest pads and R1200GS handguards (which fit perfectly on the F800GS)

Very nice, I hate to ask ... but ... about how much are we talking for the mount & case in the USA?

Carrier $138
Top Case $452
Backrest Pads $100

Top boxes/cases. pure price and supply

Look, i know that i can get all types of top boxes. After riding an Suzuki Across (gsx250f) for 3 years I really want a good top box (it has an inbult 'top box'). So please just add the info in the format of;

Brand:
Model:
Mounting plate:
Ease of fitting (if self fitted, other wise N/A):
PRICE (most important!!! in local currency):

Alex - thanks -- mounting forward?

Carrier $138
Top Case $452
Backrest Pads $100

Geezzz not going to be hard to break the buget here ... :o

I read somewhere that with some extra brackets the case could be mounted forward over the passenger seating section ... but it sounded like it might be hard to switch back and forth... but would perhaps give driver back support on long rides?

Has anybody messed with that ...

Thanks,
Jim

Can anyone tell me what the width of the '08 F650 would be with H&B 37ltr panniers. I have read elsewhere that a good max. should not be more than 100cm. I am planning for a long trip, both bitumen and off-road and looking for the most practical in size and durability.

Thanks

H&B measure 23cm wide, plus I think, 15cm each side for extension of the carriers. This is what I have heard from the dealer, but want to know for sure what it is altogether when on the bike.

Less is better.

Alex, where did you order the bike from, Bavarian or from the US?

Neither... Got it from Enzo. He has a BMW/MOTOGUZZI/DUCATI dealership in Caracas.

Bavarian retails the bike for $25000 while Enzo does for $21000 (in both cases it includes ABS breaks, heated grips, on-board computer & center stand).

Wasn't worth going through all the trouble of importing the bike myself from the U.S.

Setting BMW pannier keys

I'm getting the bike delivered in September from a local dealer. Top case, carrier, locks and R1200GS handguards coming in from a US dealer.

I'm gonna need to do this myself :(

Here you go - a friend sent me this but when I looked at it I decided I would rather have it done by BMW anyway - they didn't charge me as I bought the panniers from them :clap

I thinkk you can buy the wafers from BMW - check with a dealer or perhaps ask around the forums??

I have not tested this but if you have no option - good luck :thumb

i sent an email to holan about the panniers, and this is what they said. they are just the 1200gsa panniers with a different rack. shipped to the us, the mounts for the 800 would be about $350 usd. that includes the rack and mounts. spendy, but i really like the way it looks.
Just an FYI - the Depot is going to be importing these. That should cut down on the shipping a bit by doing it in bulk.

They're still going to be expensive though, especially considering the cases aren't cheap either.

There is a simpler bodge...

There is a relatively easy way to convert your lock cylinders to the ignition key. It is less secure, but allows the user to use the keys that came with the locks, or the ignition key.

With the lock cylinder removed, remove the lock key (careful not to lose any of the wafers), and insert the ignition key. You will see that the wafers do not all line up flush. Simply take the cylinder to a grinder or file away the protruding wafers (carefully!) until they are flush with the cylinder barrel. File or trim away any swarf so that everything operates smoothly, and install the cylinders. The bags can now be opened with the original lock keys or the ignition key.

It should be apparent that this is not the elegant or factory recommended option, but has served me well with many BMW cases. YMMV ;):beerjug:
