► Hard luggage--panniers and topboxes

I have seen the H&B setup on a bike and I it looks enormous
I would guess +120cm.
I am using their top box on my f800 GS and I am quite happy with it.

i think i've landed on a luggage system. Alpos pannier balanced set (32&36L) with the SW Motech quick release frame. All in with lid tie down brackets and powder coated in black is £450! Narrower than everything else aluminium except the TT special system which is the guts of £1000. a score n'est ce pas?

Where abouts have you seen the powder coated ones or are you thinking DIY?

I have maybe a dumb question, forgive the GSer noob please, but are the hard cases so neccessary on GSes? I mean the side ones. My wife is always my riding buddy on her bike so we normally have enough space for 2-week trip stuff even without side cases. That's why I rarely take the side cases with me - just do not like to ride my G1200GT with them on. Maybe GSing is really different so to have a tank bag and a 50-liter bag behind you on each bike is not enough? Though there still is some space for tent or another bag. Please clarify. TIA

i agree with you. this summer i did close to 3 weeks around europe with a tent, sleeping bag, and clothes in a couple of ortlieb bags behind me. someone once said on here that the germans came up with the hard luggage thing and now everyone thinks it's de rigoeur to have tins on the side. i am buying them because i plan a few longer trips in the near future and also they're convenient from a security point of view. i reckon anything up to a month doesn't need them, unless you're bringing cooking equipment and a not insubstantial tool kit etc.

http://www.bykebitz.co.uk/ (and speak to Gareth - he's very helpful and knows what I've ordered). If you've an 800 and ask for the same, it'll cost you £404 and includes tie down loops, lock system, balanced cases (32and36L) and SW Motech quick release frames/adaptors.
It'll cost me £15 per case to have them powder coated black here (inside and out) and means I don't need liners as well as the fact it'll look better with the bike. I don't like the look of the polished alu tin on such a nice looking bike, it lets it down IMHO. will post up photos when i get it all sorted.

If you are moving from a F650gs (2001) touratech 35 liter setup...it is 1022 wide 40.25"...That is what I am used to so that size is a good reference for me..and maybe others....

Due to delivery issues my retailer could not flag these as officially launched this summer, but I got mine after 1 month waiting time (bike purchased late August). They are now a part of the Norwegian official BMW Motorrad catalogue, but you have to ask your own BMW dealership about delivery in your part of the world. Demand is furious, delivery capacity non-optimal and I was very lucky to get my delivery.

I don't know the exact prices yet and await those data from my retailer. This is part of my total purchase contract and I still wait for the BMW crashbars and the touring windshield support bracket.

First they ordered a non-fitting pair of R1200GS ADV boxes - as posted about earlier - and I expect the price to be similar for the dedicated, special-fit F800GS boxes, while the alu-pannier-racks are unique extras for the F800GS. As you know already, the R1200GSA comes with the racks fitted - so no comparison is made yet unless somebody can dive into the spare parts list and check it out.

Are the ADV cases better/ more rigid and reliable/ than ZEGA/TT or Jesse or TRAX or Caribou cases? In case of tip-over or low-speed drop?
What made your choice?

A no-brainer; Touratech has up to 4 months backorder on F800GS panniers, while SW-Motech state up to 16 weeks delivery for their alloy boxes. Thus I opted for the BMW ones since my dealer is a nice business.

I have no idea or practical experience to evaluate if the BMW panniers are better or worse than TT, Trax or Caribou.

regarding the pricing, you had just paid everything (a lump sum figure) for the bike together with those accessories you mentioned? so no breakdown on the individual items from your dealer yet am i right?

Affirmative. Lump sum figure was signed and I'm still awaiting the individual breakdown and some minor issues sorted out. The dealer and I have cooperated well, I figure - because there was no certainty in me getting all the ordered items.

What may have helped was the fact that I don't have a car license, ride all-year around and depend on panniers for daily chores. Like stacking up with groceries and consumables etc. That made the dealership put in the extra effort needed, I guess. But heck, I'm a very happy camper indeed! onyack

They are very well finished and they are indeed narrow but for the F800GS I think they look too nice. . I realise there are the bigger more angular versions but there are no points to lash fuel bottles, roll bags etc etc.

Fantastic, the finish quality is second to none. I have worked in the metal working industry an i know how hard it would be to get a finish like that. The racks are good and close like they should be. Sexy piece of work. The locks look stonger that TT. BMW and others. The only question remains, what is the price? I would say they will a bit on the expensive side, but justified.

It looks like it uses Jesse's double loop system that allows you to mount the bags in a more forward position when you don't have a pillion (stops the rear wheel weave).

I had Jesse bags for a while on my 1200GS and although ultimately I returned them, they are still one of the best out there.

My #1 criterion is quick-detachable and #2 is anodised or powder coated inside and out. Without those two I don't look any further.

I think attachment points would be easy to install to fit your needs. I think a lot of the other luggage systems are just too wide. The bike has a big ass to begin with let alone adding huge bags that stick out wider than the handlebars.

That is why I have waited so long. The width of other panniers on the F800/650 GS could be a real issue when filtering and also with regard to stability when fully loaded. These are nice boxes and well, no, superbly finished.

speaking of panniers my touratech spec set are here at last

now the question is do I keep the trax gear or Fit the Touratech ones

I like the Trax as I can remover rails etc and use bike in that mode
I don't like trax cause of width but its not caused me a issue as yet
I have filtered been to France etc done over 5000 miles
they all lock with one key easy to get on and of with out going inside
case???


Touratech have been tested by Touatech only i have had Touratech panniers on in the past on my 1150gs and all I can say is they did what they was supposed to do

any suggestions

Put the TT ones on and try them out, THEN you'd really know which is for you..oh ya btw, pics pics pics of the TT set!
