Sorry freeloader rack won't be for sale. Like all the Adventure Spec stuff too much. Current preferred option is to take off the rear grab rail altogether and then get some new spacers for the AS rack. That way everything sits as it should and I can revert back to standard if I want too. Just ordered the Beowulf radiator grill shown earlier as well. Gotta stop buying these "extras".

Glad to see someone else with a excessive modification problem.
I was actually thinking about starting a self help group, but then my new wunderlich spot lights and rear splash guard have just landed on my desk at work so I've banished the thought.
You can never have too much.... can you????

I'll be modifying my Adventure Spec rack to fit with the Stahlkoffer panniers over the coming week, so I'll keep you posted with how I get on. I just need to decide whether to manufacture new spacers or butcher the ones I got with the rack. I'm a bit reluctant to do any butchering in case I change my mind about anything, but fortunatley I work for an engineering company so making new bits / shims etc shouldn't present too much of a barrier, (after fiting my new farkles of course!).

No problem Dave, thanks for the response. Still think I might just make my own - already had done, out of 3mm ally plate, just to let me fit a Vario topcase, but when I took it off to fit the pannier frames, it had already started to crack around the mounting holes. But I've got a piece of 5mm ally sheet in the garage...

Answering my own question here - yes, the 1200 GS vario top box does indeed fit the 650/800 mounting plate. In fact it fits a lot better (i.e. tighter) than it did on the 1200.
Why the weight limit on Touratech luggage rack?
I've currently got a givi box mounted onto the bike specific givi top box rack on the 800GS. The other half has said the bike feels cramped after the 1200GS I had previously. I've now bought a Touratech rack, the idea being to mount the givi box onto it, and set it further back to give her more room. However, there's a warning note with it saying not to exceed 5kg load. Even her leaning back on it, will exert more than 5kg loading. The givi rack is BOLTED down to the bike and feels rock solid. The Touratech has fancy looking countersunk jobbies, that they say must be fitted using loctite. Is the Touratech rack flimsy in comparison?

It's not the rack that's the problem. It's putting too much weight that far back on the bike, which lightens the front end and will cause handling problems. The farther back you shift the weight, the worse it will get. You could probably put 200 kgs. on that rack without any harm to it. But I wouldn't recommend it!

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't thought of the possible effect on handling by effectively positioning a nine stone pillion too far back. On the 1200, I mounted the givi box further back than normal, to give her plenty of space. Thinking back, it went light at the front with her on the back when accelerating hard, and occasionally lifted the front wheel an inch or two. Looking at the 800, with the box mounted on the givi plate, she is sitting "just" forward of the rear wheel. Moving the box back, will position her nearer to the top of the wheel. I assume I'm safest leaving the givi rack on and letting her feel squashed. If I was a wheelie god, I would move her back and ride everywhere on the back wheel.

Yea - the front lifts more easily followed by a sharp 'clonk!' on the helmet.
Then there's the 'look' at the next rest stop (why can't women have 20l bladders???)
I take it you turn up the pre-load when it's fully loaded???

I've been running that same configuration of wife, touratech plate, givi mount and 48 litre kappa top box for a year now. I set the box a little further back to give the size 14(ish) wife a bit more space.
Nothing has fallen off or looks as if it's about to. Not even the wife.
To press my luck further, I even added a Givi rack onto the top box and stuck a tent and two roll mats on top of the fully loaded Kappa box. Nothing. Nowt. Nada.
I think the weight advice is a little of the nanny state syndrome.
Think India and carry on.

Looking for a bit of advice here. I don't want to use hard luggae on my F650GS (09) and was thinking about Ortlieb saddlebags or even the single side bag as i won't always need storage space. I currently have a Krieger soft pac and will use a roll bag for tents or sleeping bags.
As such i need to know about generic pannier racks to ensure the correct distance between the exhaust and the luggage. Is there such a thing???

As you saw from the piccy i posted its pretty easy and safe to strap a 30L Ortlieb and Tent to the pillion seat. That setup did 4k miles around spain with no problems at all.
Highly recommend Motorcycle Rok straps as well. No hocks (just loops on each end) and very easy to use.
