so would you recommend to replace the clip?
I checked with my dealer today - the partnumber of the hose is the same for 2009 and 2008. That means the hose is the same.

If you can get to the dealer easily enough, no let them do it.
Every time a dealer has to do warranty work he can charge BMW for it, hopefully the more people that do this the more BMW will realise there is a problem and they should do the right thing and recall the old casting and issue a new one with a lip all the way around it

vertical coolant hose leaking

bike mileage now reaching 4700miles..
just noticed a streak of dried greenish/whitish layer on top of my engine casing and realised its my coolant dripping from the bottom of a Vertical joining hose that connects the main coolant reservoir to flow to smaller pipes. its the the Right side of the bike just above the engine casing.. :(

interesting thing is that when the bike is moving, the rate of drip is non-existant. but when the bike stops and i engage to Neutral, the rate of coolant drip is as bad as 1 drop per second.

f**king 'unstoppable'! :clap

anyone with the same problem? going to my dealer tmr..

Are you sure its leaking from there?, its the top hose everyone else has had a problem with, it works its way off at the back so you cant see the problem at first, then the coolant runs down the back of the casting and appears to drip from the bottom of the casting.

damn sure its leaking from the VERTICAL tube with a diameter of roughly 1.5cm. this tube is situated just directly above the engine casing with the 'BMW' inscription at the side, and not the Big horizontal coolant hose higher at the top..

too bad i cant show any pictures.. will try to take 1 later...

the coolant leaking from point numbered as 1, dripping down to point 2.
anyone had such an encounter before?

problem solved yet?

My dealer has finally issued a recall here in tropical Philippines. What sucks is it'll take 3 weeks for replacement part to arrive. Until then my bike is stuck in the shop. They won't do a temporary fix and they don't have loaner units. To those who've received the replacement part, has this issue been resolved?

I'd get my 'bike out of the dealers and superglue the top hose as per my earlier post #21 ... it never moved in over 5,000 miles!

Otherwise the replacement hoses the dealers are fitting are working just fine :thumb

Mine wasn't leaking but the dealer replaced the hose anyway ...

Good thing. The new hose is slightly longer and more likely to stay put & not leak like mine did. My mechanic rang me yesterday and said he's changed the old leaky one. Gone be a fine summer season this one with an updated bike. :beerjug:

Possible final fix!

I say Possible because i dont have a definitive answer yet but the Top guys at Bath Rd motorrad, Bristol say that there is now new part number for the casting that the hose attaches to!
I urge caution here, but it might be that BMW have finally realised that the old casting was deficient in the lip department?!?!?!?!
Anyway time will tell one is on order from BMW for examination.
My hose is on its way off again of course, when i get it done it will be the 3rd time in 13000 miles, my hope is the new casting will prove to be the answer otherwise i will be alloy brazing a lip on the old one.
Cheers

Top Hose

Was out on a lovely run last Friday all over the West coast of Scotland on my 04/08 gs650 - have been watching my hoses carefully (oo err!) since reading the posts - when, without warning I was covered in very hot smelly water all around my crotch. The engine warning light came on and I pulled in straight away.
I had to walk the bike to a filling station about a mile back. Fortunately there was a quik fit who have me a jubilee clip and a screwdriver and I managed to fix it. I hope there isn't any engine damage (cooked) - although I did pull up straight away.
When I contacted Motorrad to book it in they said they knew about it. I asked if it was a recall and they couldn't/wouldn't say !. They phoned me back later and said that there were a further 6! updates - including checking the wheelnut tightness on the front wheel !.
I will let you know what the other updates / recalls are when I get it back - has anyone actually received a recall notice from BMW about this well documented problem ?. It seems it'll take someone to sue them to sort this out

My upper radiator hose was changed by factory recall along with the ring antenna a fortnight ago. No problems with BMW recalls here :beerjug:

NEW PART NUMBER- HOT OFF THE PRESS!!

OK those nice chaps at Bath Rd BMW have got the new part in
The news is its the same as the old part EXCEPT the part where the hose goes over the casting is now bare metal (no paint) AND that area has been sandblasted to give the hose a grippy surface to er..... grip:toungincheek

Its being fitted on Tuesday so i will try and get some pics of it before it goes on.

Cheers

We can tell you are new to the site, coz you didn't see the sticky posting at the top of this forum that has a whole 10 pages discussing this issue ;)

See here

Welcome anyway, and have fun on your GS.

What colour did you get? Don't say the gay grey...

OK top hose update.
Ive had the new top casting fitted and my 3rd top hose replacement.
The casting is a new part number but is only different insomuch as the paint is no longer on the spigots where the hose clamps over it, ive taken pics but i cant post them on here yet as im not a subscriber and im too skint to pay for that at the moment but i can email them to someone else to post up here if required.

The other news is ive still got the original casting so i plan to alloy braze a lip on it all the way around as a final fix if all else fails.

I will do a series of pics on that once ive got around to subscribing
( yes, i know, i know, alright! im a tight wad)

End of top hose matter ?????

I got my new 650 twin in red last Thursday. It came with the new long hose and
the black clip, they told me its a Feb.2009 assembly. (is there a way I can check this out?) I asked the technician about the top hose leakage, I was servicing my f 650 single there for a long time, and he said end of the matter.
He removed the lid of the coolant pump, its the casting that the top hose attaches to and had a magnesium alloy lip casted all around. Also paint was
removed and the area tha the hose covers was roughned. You have nothing to
worry about.
I hope it is the End of the matter but i will be watching the top hose every day
and will keep you posted.

About the bike? Though this is not the right plase, one word so SMOOTH.

I had an unscheduled stop at BMW Linz in Austria the other day (valve separated from inner tube almost outside the dealership! ) and they said while they were sorting out my flat rear tyre that they noticed a few scheduled updates had not been done and that the radiator top hose had not been done either. I said that's weird as I'd left it into BMW manchester not 3 weeks before for a full service.

I reckoned the hose actually had been changed and was still on. I'm not sure if BMW Manchester were lax in updating the computer system or they hadn't actually done the work... one to watch for the future me thinks.

They are always too busy and if they are skipping work because they are under time pressure this is not good. :augie
