► Radiator top hose failures

Hi Martin,
Good to get some positive feedback. Riding alone things like hoses acting the MAGGOT can get in on you. Someone earlier suggested carrying cable tie which seems like a really good fall back. Fingers crossed!

Crossed fingers didn't work!

My hose came loose about a week ago. NOG confirmed that SBW had already done the mod. But they were known to come loose again, apparently the modded hose is no longer than the original. The technician said that they sand the stub (waterpump) down to give the hose something to grip to.

I got a new chain and sprockets though!
 
At the Risk of repeating myself ... ;-)

Still no problems ... must remember to tighten it!

Solution is very simple ... just put a screw type jubilee hose clamp on the joint furthest from the radiator. I had to do this so I could ride my bike to the dealer to get its 20,000 km service. Strangely the dealer fix for someone with this problem is a jubilee hose clamp!

So far no problem ... just remember the reason that manufacturers use spring clamps is because they are self adjusting, so every now and then you should check that its tightened properly.

My bike has the newer longer hose, but to be safe, I fitted some Jubilee hose clips, as these seem to do up tighter than the BM ones, no problems as yet
even in the heat of Portugal, and this weekends 25 degree's in the sunny South West:D

The new hose seems to do the trick, even with the OEM spring clips! I did 2500 km back from South Portugal without any sign of distortion or movement.
On reflection, I would be inclined to replace the hose every 15000km or so, and particularily before any long trips.
My first hose lasted about that distance and that included 5000km in Portugal and Spain last year in temperatures in the low 30s mainly...phew!
One other observation which may help is on Distance to Disaster (DD); my hose started to move just after leaving Fishguard in S Wales, and I gave up the ghost and called BMW Assist at Evora, southern Portugal, just under 2000km later.

Water hose

Has anybody had any problems with the radiator hose forcing its way off the waterpump. Had a short ride 40 miles to Dunsop Bridge and ended up with water spitting out. Used my leaterman t0 hold clamp open and forced hose back on, rest of ride had no problems. It could of been badly replaced at some point ? but I did a 1000 miles 2 weeks ago with no problems.
 
If you search on here, then you'll find quite a few threads on this well documented problem. It was the subject of a recall/mod. Although mine gave problems one year after being modded.

Do your homework before you take it in so that you can make sure the jobs done properly.
 
My hose came loose last week and when I looked at it at the time it defo had a bulge. Used my leatherman to hold clip while forcing back on, So is it the hose or a pressure problem. Checked my log book and was supposed to of been done last May. Off to phone Southport now to see what they say.
 
Phoned Southport and they have booked it in for the chain recall and said they would investigate the hose while it was there, from the discussion he said there shouldnt be a charge !!!!!! if it just needs a clip as the hose was replaced last May. My bike is just out of warrenty but surely if the hose is s~** then BMW should sort it.
 
It is rumored that a new design of the water pump housing is available that is better able to retain the hose. Has anyone else heard of this
?
If so, do you have the part number of the improved housing?

I am told that BMW Australia are going to give me a new water pump housing. It can't come quick enough for my liking ... I am getting a bit sick of constantly fiddling with the top radiator hose.

They didn't have one in the country but I believe one is coming. They are so new that they don't have a part number in the system yet. (I am told!)

When it comes I will see if I can find a part number on it, and then tell you the number and (most importantly) whether it actually worked.

I will check with my dealer tomorrow ... Australia day here at the moment (This ere's the Wattle, the emblem of our land ...) and ask how its going, what BMW policy is on this and what the part number is if they have one.

I get the impression that if you have had the hose recall and it didn't work you get the new water pump cover ... no problem!

Went for a lovely ride out yesterday with a few mates. Luckily we decided to meet at NOG. When I got off, I noticed the familiar white stains on my previously clean engine cases. The top hose had come loose again. Very frustrating. My bikes had the recall, then failed last year. It's been fixed under warranty, and failed again. This time I made them fix it with a Jubilee clip, so hepefully no more problems.

Anyone got any contact details for someone who will lsten at BMW UK. I've got a few issues that I'd like to take up with them.

I must 'big up' NOG, who dropped everything to fix my bike at no notice. Furthermore, they didn't charge me......cheers guys.

BTW, great day out. We rode out through Burford, Bibury, Bradford, on to Frome, Devizes, then across to Calne, before heading back to Oxford.
 
I have to report that I have the "new" water pump cover which doesn't look much different but it has actually fixed the problem and I now have no issues with the top radiator hose. Hallelujah!
