► Seats (too high, too hard, pillion...) and suspension

Guys, thanks for the feedback. The order is going in now and hopefully many miles of comfortable riding this summer.

800 GS's seat

Hello all

Just had my seat redone this week by Viking Vinyl, East of London. Must say the ride is now 10 times better, amazing what a piece of memory foam can do! Those of you that sit in the saddle for hours at a time may want to consider the mod. Web site below;

How much? What does it look like? How long was the turnaround time?

Turn around time was an hour for my seat. Had a coffee and read mags in house. I opted for the same seat cover resulting in my seat appearing as an original. The guy that carries out the mod’s name is Lee. After discussing my requirements, he advised on the use of “memory foam”, removed the original cover, separates the OE foam from the plastic base, guts the inside of the OE foam (leaving the top, I went for the OE contours on top) then cuts, shapes and installs the new “memory foam” and presto! £70 squids for both rider and pillion. Was out for a 5 hour ride yesterday as a long distance trial. What a difference! Why did I not do it sooner!

Check it out!

No picture as it appears as an original. My modified seat looks exactly like the original but is much more comfortable!

Just a bit cheaper (but better quality) then touratw*t...:P
I know where me hard erned cash is heading...

Thanks jarax :thumb2

I also went to http://www.vikingvinyl.co.uk/ to get my F800GS seat fixed.

Earlier in the year I went to Morocco and the original seat killed my arse :eek

The guy removed the original foam, hollowed out the underside of the original, filled the hollow with memory foam and fixed it all back together again.

Service quality: Very nice chap who offers up a coffee whilst you wait. He made it very clear that he will fix it if it's not comfortable. He will take your bike at short notice (puts mail order stuff on hold for people who turn up). Job took 1 hour exactly.

Cosmetics: No change. Seat looks EXACTLY the same before and after. No point in posting a photo.

Comfort: Very soft compared to the previous hard seat.

Negatives: So soft, i can feel the seat ribs. Although this is so slight that i will not take it back (even though he offered to fix any problems). Also, the riding position is about an inch or two lower.

Price: £55 for rider / £80 for rider and pillion

Recommendation... this guy comes with my high recommendation. Suggest you ask him to leave more of the original foam so that you soften your seat slightly without feeling the seat ribs below.

Good luck.
Steve.

BMW accessories high seat for 650 GS

In need of a little more legroom on my new 650 GS but reluctant to part with the cash for a Touratech high seat, I was interested to discover the BMW accessories catalogue listed a high seat option for a much more reasonable £169. It arrived yesterday, but when I came to fit it I was slightly taken aback to discover it was identical to the seat already on my bike! It transpires that the "High Seat" is what you get if you don't specify the "Low Seat". To my mind "Standard Seat" would make a lot more sense as a description - my dealer was unaware the accessories catalogue high seat was in fact the standard fitment, and I certainly wouldn't have guessed. Anyway, after a no-quibble refund, my dealer discovered a "Rallye" seat in the parts list, which from the line drawing appears significantly higher than standard. He has kindly offered to get one in on sale or return for me to look at, as there is no photo of the item available.

I'll update when I have seen it.

Cheers
Paul

Yea I would have assumed that BMW offer no higher seat than the one they supply as stock, unless the lower one is specified.

Seems as if your dealer are looking after you, I'll be interested to see how you get on with the new one they are getting in for you.
