► Tyre choices and emergency repairs

Intresting you say ultra heavy tubes are not recommended! can i ask why?

I think, theoretically, it's not a good idea to use them at speed on big bikes on the road due to them not allowing a tyre to disipate heat efficiently.

I think in reality you won't see any problems.

The problem with the 4mm thick UH tubes as I understand it is heat build up. I have had two fitters refuse to fit them to my 800. Anecdotally, they are harder to change and patch too.

Rear tyre, how long has yours lasted

Hello all

My rear tyre is squared off, there is crap loads of grip on the outsides of the tyre, but right down the centre there is hardly any, and because of this there is about 1mm of tread.

I have not even done 6000 miles yet, which is good because my service which is due in a couple of weeks can fix the rear tyre / brake pads.

How long did your rear tyre last?

Rear Battlewing 3.5k
Front nearly shagged in same distance.

Just done a rear TKC80 in 2.6k, front looks unmarked.....

Almost identical to my results. So much so, that there's no point in me posting mine.

That's just being lazy.

OK then, rear Battlewing 3501(-ish) miles, changed both for TKCs, back TKC looks almost shagged in 2601(-ish) miles, and the front looks like it'd do at least another 2601.

Izzat better? :D

have had the same front for 3 rear TKC's. got about 2602 out of the current rear. dropping heidi's on in the next day or two. hopefully get more mileage out of them.

Have you done loads of motorway miles. That could explain the wear down the middle.
Or you might have had the tyre over inflated
Or you might try going a bit faster round the corners :augie

Battlewings

The rear - on about 7500 miles now with about 3000 left :clap
The front - got the tyre pressure wrong on a long 6 country trip and had to change it at 7500 miles :blast

I'm still on my original set of Battlewing's front and real, coming up to the 8000 mark with 3mm left on both the front and back although they looking a little shocking (rutted and small rip's in the thick part of the tread) due to a few off-road excursions. Also have a little squaring on the back tyre but this would be down to a few long stretches on the good old motorways!

Going to be looking to purchase a new set for my GS although will be looking for a tyre with a little more off-road bias. I am welcome to suggestions.

Distanzias

I got about 6K out of the OE battles with about 3mm left but they were twitchy as hell on overbanding, white lines etc so I have just replaced with Avon Distanzias as they the only ones Pro-tyre had in stock. They are chunkier than battles but not up to TKC standard for off-road. I paid about £178 fitted on loose wheels with new valves but not tubes.

I wanted Anakees but Pro-tyre couldn't get hold of them from Michelin, same with Tourances, and Battlewing Gs. They all had either front or back but not both and had no delivery date for new stock - a couple of other makes didn't do the 21in. My local Motorrad had Anakees in stock but they quoted me £260 fitted!!

I haven't done much mileage yet but the Distanzias feel OK on road and a bit of dryish green lane - probably not quite as road friendly as battles but better off road.

7700 from my front just changed for another Battlewing (wanted to try anakee but could not get them anywhere)
I think my rear will last till 9 or 10 thou.

My TKC80's were put on at the 14000 mile mark. They are still on after Sibirsky Extreme and I'm up to 21000 miles now. So a nice 7000 miles out of them. Sure they are squared off but the front one is still not bad.

I have some Anakees arriving in the post tomorrow and I have to fit them before I head off to Dover to meet Mongoose and Zippy :augie. Having never fitted a tyre before it's going to be an interesting evening

BattleWings. 6000m and probably only another 500 left in both.

anyone know where you can get anakee 2's online? i fancy trying them and can't seem to find one for the front.

Spoke to Michelin and the front tyre is in short supply and there are none in the UK at the moment
