It absolutely won't, it'll be as slack as it can get!

The tightest the chain will run is when the gearbox sprocket, swingarm bearing and rear wheel axle are all in line.

Anything above or below this and the chain will be slacker as the swingarm pivot and gearbox output shaft are not co-located...
 
If the chain has tight spots on it 500 miles after purchase, you need a new chain (at their expense). So long as the dealer is paying for the wheel bearing replacement I wouldn't query the work, replacing the wheel bearings is a half-hour job on top of the chain replacement.

See post #8 on this thread where it took just 1.5 hours including sending runners for two sets of bearings and drifting out the old bearing without the correct tools.

Whenever I read Mark2jag's posts I must admit that I too let out the odd 'Really!?'. However, despite the fact that this particular matter has currently cost us a brand new Triple Black GS loan bike that unfortunately for all involved got written off and we are currently unable to get any contribution to the excess, I feel that Mark2jag may in fact have a point! The wheel bearing, head race bearings and full service were all done prior to delivery and the chain was properly adjusted (which we know how to do). It is now 1,000 miles (detail) since the bike was delivered but it would appear that the chain has developed 'hot spots' which may have contributed to it's early demise. So, to avoid doubt, we will fit a new chain and sprockets and bearing at no cost - which I think is fair.

Thats fair and Im pleased to hear it. Not exactly in the money at the moment but thats not your fault. Look forward to getting this insurance business sorted although i cant really be blamed if some dick in a van decides to do a u turn across 4 lanes of dual carriageway. As it would seem I cant have my bike back until the insurance is sorted out looks like ill be having to take extended time off work unless i can find alternative ways to get to work as buses are out of the question as they dont run at four in the morning
 
It is not very often that we see the " behind the scenes" cost of the dealers..Yes a lot of people shun them for being expensive, As you say, the excess on the insurance claim, chain and sprockets, new head bearings all come at a cost to you. That eats into your profit margin.
It is true to say I think that a small amount of "bad" dealers taint the reputation of the very good one's who do their very best to satisfy customers whilst trying hard to keep their very hard earned reputation intact.
I think it would raise a few eyebrows if the general public knew the real cost of operating a business, be it in motorcycles or a simple plumber with a white van.
So I think it speaks volumes that a dealer would care enough about just one of their customers concerns and follow the threads and comments that can follow on from sites like these..
It is also nice to have a good conclusion to the problem that one of our members face...
I wonder how many members will read this whole thread over the next few months..Now that's good advertising...

Can't you just pay the excess to BS, get your bike back and let the insurance co's get your money for the excess back from the other Van driver, in the fullness of time......................simples:bounce1

You get your bike back, go to work and earn some money to cover the excess

thats a fair point why Dont i just do that. Well in a nutshell I dont have it. I dont have the necessary in my own account to sort it out. Also I was not to blame, this **** in his van should be fronting up not me.. A realisation that insurance companies take thier time is slowly dawning on me.

Im flat broke and cant even afford to collect the bike let alone pay their excess!!!!.
Dont want sympathy, but was asked a question and felt I had to put my side of the case.

Job done.

When I was a lad many many moons ago, when you borrowed a bike, the saying was,,,If you bend it, you mend it..
The dealer has been nice enough to let you borrow a brand new bike. Unfortunately you have had an accident ( not your fault I know )( but at least your OK)...
I would imagine the dealers insurance premium is ( to be blunt) bloody horrendous.
Yes I agree that the twat in the van is at fault and his insurance company will pay out for all expenses, Either repair the bike or pay the dealer the £12,000 that the bike cost to replace, Also they will pay you for your helmet, clothes,gloves and such. You will get the money back from the van mans insurance it will just take a little time....Good luck..Tosh
 
My only bit of advice is give White Dalton solicitors a call. I had to use them many moons ago and they were fantastic. Just call and explain the details and see if they can give you some advice on what to do.

Hiya Dave Thanks for the Non judgemental advice. Nice to know someone can see past the Obvious. I've consulted with Rider support services, and get this I cant have a loan bike because the bike I crashed wasnt my own and I have a perfectly serviceable bike which I could ride (yeah if i could make the excess appear from bloody nowhere!!!!!) Rider support services have approached both Bikers legal defence and also hexagon hire and neither will loan me a bike because again the bike i had an accident on was not my own, etc etc etc
Im also told that the the van drivers insurance will take a minimum of 21 days to even LOOK AT the claim, let alone sort it out. RSS say that I will just have to suck it up and wait the full 21 days. Not going to go over stuff i have already written, but looks like ill have no transport for at least 21 days , so am well fecked. Anyone got a pushbike i can borrow?? Or are you afraid I'll crash that too.... Cmon guys anyone help me out here??? Please dont suggest just paying the excess. If you dont know why I cant then you obviously havent read my previous posts properly...

Good options, been there and tried all those suggested with very little luck.

Im in enough pain at the moment to tell work im signing myself off until further notice. I could probably dose meself up with painkillers IF icould get to work, but I cant so thats that.

On a serious note, anyone out there got a bike i can borrow, long as it has an engine , even a moped would save me some of the donkey work and means i wouldnt have to get up 2 hours before i have to be at work, even though sometimes i do anyway..

Sell my bike, what a fckuing cheek. It took me MONTHS and MONTHS of saving to get the bike i wanted.....

bearings can't 'give' and if they are decent bearings will easily take the loads applied.

HOWEVER, the bearings specced by BMW are poor and don't have the load rating. This leads to premature failure.

The chain will apply load to the bearings if it is too tight - but it is the chain that will 'give' - ie stretch due to the load, not the bearings.

If the wheels were machined wrong for the bearings - then no other bearing would fit either - its just poor quality penny pinching bearing spec.

same for the chain, so i've heard. :thumb2

its all shite - buy a Yamaha :D

BUT............................

Lets move on shall we......

A massive thank you to Smythson of this parish for lending me a mountain bike so that IF i can get to a state where I can ignore the pain I COULD cycle to work, in the absence of my bike back from BS.

On a separate note I did what i was told not to do today entirely out of frustration. I phoned the van driver who knocked me off and had a genuinely politely worded chat withhim in which he expressed his surprise that I should be contacting him. I asked him if he was gonna cough up and admit liability and he told me he wasnt liable as it was down to his insurers now. I asked him if he thought a U turn across 4 lanes of dual carraiageway was in any way responsible and he ummed and ahhed a lot and then said he had another call and had to go. I think i explained to him how sensible his actions were and put the phone down.

Im quite proud of myself for not shouting or swearing at him.

Im told he admitted liability to the officer who attended the accident with the words " YES it was a bit of a silly thing to do, but i just didnt think" so does that count as an admission of liability or are the police not allowed to get involved.... I really would value an opinion on the last half of this pleease from anyone who may be in the know (serving or retired police officers would be especially welcome. Even better if you happen to be TRAFPOL.
