F800 GS wheel bearings
It's coming up to first MOT time and I have a bit play in my front wheel bearings (just over 30K on them), and I'd rather not put the OEM chinese crap back in, so I'm looking for some nice bearing advice...
Am I right in saying that front & rear bearings are all 6204RS, whats the best brand to go for SKF???

SKF have long been recognised as the benchmark in bearings ... they are made in China!

I used NTN bearings when I did mine - use search and you'll find the codes ..

Out of interest... when the bearings go in a wheel, do they all go at once or is it more common for just one to fail individually? Are the bearings the same front and rear?

The bearings are all the same.
If just one of the pair (there are 3 in the rear though) go, the net effect is the same as if both go. Having said that it doesn't take much wear at all - unless it is a catastrophic failure - to cause the bearing to go sloppy, I guess it would be hard to tell which one's gone, besides which if one's gone the other won't be far behind... hence changing both at the same time.

Just thinking about carrying a couple of spares on my trip. Don't really want to carry 5 bearings but was thinking 2 would probably be enough to cover a failure front and rear (assuming it wasn't catastrophic failure of course).

Poisonally, I'd be very tempted to change them before I left ...
Depends on how many miles there are on them - my fronts were shagged at 1800 miles, but the NTN replacements are (were!) still in great shape at 19000 ...
It's not a big job really, and one that would take at least one possible failure factor out of your travel/worry equation...

Sounds like very sage advice. If they're as cheap as you say it's defo worth doing, and if the old ones are still good then keep them as the spares??? I think the bearings are a high risk area of potential failure when loaded up and over rough terrain.

The bearings are removed by pounding them out, generally against the inner race... which fooks them oop... If you install decent bearings and regrease them, then they'll be good for thousands of miles ...

after reading some of the other bearing failure posts I can't really complain that the original OEM bearings have been OK up to 30K, they came up as an advisory item on first MOT, along with the chain & sprockets.

Are the shaft seals perishable? Do they need replacing when changing bearings or can you reuse the old ones?

In the USA the F800gs bearing bore in the wheel was a little under sized and crushed the outer race of the bearing, and of course they failed very soon.
They are borring out the bearing bore and problem solved. The 658's have not had this problem. I have 63,500 miles on my 09 and bearings are still in good condition.

TBH, I wouldn't muck about with it close to a big trip if there's nothing wrong. You're asking for trouble.

62042RS SKF Bearings: 20mmX47mmX14mm Ebay for about £4.30 each... don't forget seals: 1 x 25x47x7 (front) & 3 x 30x47x7 (front & rear) Ebay for about £2.40 each.
