I think I now understand why the shop couldn't get weights to fit. The weights they have been using are too wide and bridge the recess in the rim :blast Now where to get 40g worth of slim weights...

gs 800 supermoto

Has any body on the forum fitted a 17inch wheel to their 800gs ? I was particularly thinking about a set of F800 alloy wheels,or using the standard hub a relacing a 17inch rim.I was told that AC Shnitzer tried this but wouldnt sell the wheels due to "safety" reasons.I really would like to lower the ride height front and back and the front wheel seems like a good place to start.I will not be riding off road so dont need a 21inch wheel and dont want a 650.Any suggestions please.

You'd have to do something else to the suspension. Changing just the front wheel would make the steering angle really steep. This would make the bike really twitchy, probably dangerous.

Well after reading that thread it looks like a go`er.I too would like to put a 17" on the front.Have to keep an eye on that thread for more info re abs ring.

Yes, a smaller front wheel will sharpen the steering head angle and decrease the trail at the front wheel. It will therefore steer more quickly. You won't have to do anything to the front forks; although it would undoubtedly be better to have the spring rate and damping optimised for road use.

No, it's unlikely to make the bike dangerous - no more so than this, anway..... (note the front wheel size)

I've recently done this

I had a 17" rim laced to an existing hub by http://www.sfxwheels.moonfruit.com/ This was after looking at the Wunderlich product and baulking at the price.

Mine is the yellow one with the orange mudguard in the ADVrider thread.

I also ride a CCM 404 which swaps between road wheels and dirt wheels reasonable often which get no suspension changes with swaps. Admittedly both wheels are swapped so the changes in geometry as not so pronounced.
The 800 two up with full luggage still rides well as speed in a straight line but feels so much better in corners with sports touring rubber on. :)

I have not done anything with the ABS yet other than cover the warning light! it appears to work until 30ish is reached. There should be another slotted ring to allow it to calibrate and function properly. Should be getting more time after this week to sort this Steffo who started the ADV thread seems to have it working

How much did this cost?I suppose a breaker for the wheel!!cost? If i did this it would lower the bike a little and make it easier on my aging hip :rob

OK finaly had the wire wheels fitted :D

as standard 19 inch, Front Wheel

Bought a f650 gs single front wheel off of Ebay a 2007 wheel and so that started the ball rolling, as they share the very samy part number / spindle, spacer, ABS ring, bearings. and same single brake disc :D

Then handed it to Hagon wheel builders who cut away the old spokes, powder coated the rim and same to the Hub after shot blasting off the plasticy coating.

Then it was rebuilt with Stainless steel spokes and nickel niples :thumb2

The rear is F800gs 17 inch again a direct fit and again with the f650 gs twin shares same spindle bearing ABS ring etc and yes very same parts number. aquired via James Herbert off a 2008 ish model having covered 7K miles

took the opertunity to fit new bearings, sprockets and Chain at 21,500 miles

The concept Idea from our overseas Freinds I understand Its done a lot in Canada and USA and even a direct front end of the F800GS into the F650GS twin forks and all.

Special mention and thanks so Much to my Friend Chad who litteraly put it all together for me (way beyond me) :thumb :beerjug:

and thanks to BMW for making same Part numbers :thumb :D

Had the center stand kiss the tarmac at der Nürburgring last year :rob

:beerjug:

... and again last week

90/90 - 21" standard front
150/70 - 17" standard rear

Both sides of the centre stand, and the prop stand all decking out at der Nürburgring last week, Metzeler Tourance :thumb

Why change ... learn to use what you've got :nenau

Centre stand springs must have stretched - there's still chicken strips on the edge of that rear tyre.....:P

cost

The Wunderlich parts are around £1500 before tyres but I'm not sure if that includes disks You could buy a DRZ, CCM or XR400 SM for this sort of cash

Ignoring the tyres, the hub and disks if you are using your own then £300 would see a rebuilt wheel with a new rim.
Replacement mudguard is up to for options. £60 from ebay
I bought a used wheel of ebay to base mine around keeping the original for when/if I want to swap back. Disk bolts will need replacing but that'll be much less than new disks When EBC and the like start doing front disks it may be easier.
