Hi I'm a new user to this forum.

After traveling around Northern Europe my F650GS started sputtering on the M20 back to London. It would only Sputter for about half a second and then the throttle would take again. Gradually over time the intervals between the sputtering become increasingly frequent.

Eventually the rev counter totally freaked out, redlining and not responding to the throttle or clutch. Eventually I got the bike into first while entering the hard shoulder and the rev counter and throttle went back to normal.

I killed the engine and jumped off to have a look. No noticeable damage, loose wires or leakage, so I jumped back on but the bike would start.

Leaving it for longer periods of time would yield a more encouraging attempt but it would not start after I pulled off onto the hard shoulder and killed the engine after the rev counter freak-out.

One tow truck lift back to London later, I successfully started the bike twice, the rev counter would jump to 2 but then die as the needle fell towards 1.5. I left it for morning.

Next morning bike would not start at all. Trawled these forums for solutions and found a few similar problems but not exactly the same. Tried some of these methods anyway, including:

1. Checking battery connection (recharged battery too) - all lights work, starter is turning but engine is not.

2. Check sidestand - no visible damage to the sensor or it's cable.

3. Check fluids - plenty of oil and petrol. Radiator is full and ample coolant available.

4. Bump start - this way the engine does what feels like a half turn but gives up once the clutch is fully released. Tried several times with the same result.

I'm a novice rider and my knowledge of any type of engine are limited to the bare basics. Has anyone here ever experienced a similar problem and found a solution?

My gut tells me the problem is simple but I fear I do not have the knowledge to identify it alone.

Thanks,
Darren

`01 F650GS wont start

Hi darr3n,
Ukgser is a great site and it has lots of info but for the F650GS there is a site just for this bike called www.f650.co.uk , you will find it through quick links on the main page. From there you`ll get yellow boxes and you want the 9th one down and click on F650 site. Post whats on here and i`m sure someone will be able to help.
Just to add as i`ve got a similar age of F650, my ignition barrel needed replacing a few weeks ago and that was causing the engine to cut out when I turned the bars excessively. No problem with the clocks though.

Best o luck, Dakarnoway

I could be talking bollix but I think there is an engine sensor (Hall sensor) somewhere that feeds the rev counter and the engine management unit. On the boxers it fairly often fails but luckily I've not yet had reason to investigate where it is on my 650.

Eventually took the bike into the pros, turns out there was carbon debris in the exhaust which affected the compression in the engine which was why the bike would not start. They just cleaned it out and it runs well again now.
