HELP PLEASE!!!

I have had my tank off to fit new battery. I also removed cat section of pipe and replaced with a "Y" section. I refitted the sensor to the "Y" section(assuming that was a correct decision??)

Went to start and it fires and runs on choke but after a few seconds it stops. I tried starting again but as soon as i touch the throttle the engine stops!!

have i missed something??

any suggestions??

sorry if this question has been asked before...I'm still trying to find my way around this great forum.

just in case

you're not familiar with the diagram, check the throttle body cables are seated correctly as shown by Fanum, often the right side I believe. Just below where your knees are when sitting on the bike.

thanks guys, i have checked this and all seems fine..still having trouble.

I have replaced the CAT still with no joy.

The only other thing which i forgot to mention, when i was refitting new battery I caught my spanner whilst tightening the positive terminal bolt, and it "arced"...would this have done something to the electrics...have checked visible fuses under the seat, all seem ok

Getting desperate now

Have you done a throttle reset? When you replace or disconnect the battery you need to open/shut the throttle a couple of times (ignition on, not running). I dont recall it will give the symptoms you described, but its a simple thing to try (normally sorts itself out when you ride the bike anyway).
It may be possible that the arcing could have caused a problem, but carefully retrace all your steps first.

Have tried the throttle test and attempted to start again with no luck!!:nenau

i am really stumped after re tracing my steps:blast

hmmmm. If you are certain you have rechecked everything that you disturbed, it may possibly be linked with the battery short and sparks. IIRC one of the others on this site has a theory that a big short circuit may damage the hall effect sensor (HES). I have not had a look at the circuit diagram, but any sensitive parts could well be affected.
You can test the HES quite easily, if you do a search there is a lot of information on this very site on how to do this.

Heres a link to the American site that is useful

thanks for the link...need to read that when im sober!! :aidan

+1 for the HES failure.

Something else comes in my mind. The HES failed on my 1100GS and on my RT too, both after sitting outside in the winter, in cold. Could warm weather have anything to do with HES failure? Anyone had this happening?

Dan.
