07 R1200 GS 600 mile service price

if you want a free service, you're going to pay more for the bike.

<s>rocket science</s>

If BMW had not increased their prices and started charging for the first service then it would be understandable, but they have increased their prices every year since 2005 and taken away the free service (first by charging owners for the consumables and now by charging for the labour element as well), cut the tool kit down to hardly anything and only give new owners 1 proper key.

Not so!!

Do the deal and then smile sweetly and then just as you are about to sign say "of course the first service will be the cost of the oil only. Wont it?"

They never say no if you look as if you about to put the pen down:thumb2

KTM 1st service £321.21
Ducati £408.34
Aprilia £248.26
Suzuki £212.58

Hmmm biking is an expensive hobby, take up crown green bowling if you want to spend your Sundays on the cheap....

So BMW are not the only ones charging for the first service nowadays. What about Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki, have they joined the bandwagon?

Had my 1200 gsa's first 600 ml service at southport superbikes last week and it cost me £90 no vat.

1 - the 07 toolkit has more in it than an 04's (IIRC).

2 - Just ask, and you'll get the 2nd metal key.

3 - Look at the adverts, they used to include the sevice, now the adverts don't. If you'd paid for it before would you be concerned about its price now?

No such thing as a free lunch :mmmm

I agree with with your comment that there are no free lunches, but I didn't put it into context of their "sales pitch" before and that's where my frustration stems from.

This is my personal experience:
They pitch their product as premium price with premium value add (i.e. more bits included in the OTR price then others). This I feel they delivered when I bought my first brand new BMW a couple of years back. Since then and especially since the LWR sponsorship/promotions, they seem to have gone for a strategy of investing in marketing (such as LWR) but recouping it by taking stuff out of the product.

So for me, who was attracted the brand and the product pre-LWR for the proposition they offered then versus now, I may have dropped out of their target market. I am disappointed and probably will have sold my BMW before the end of the year.

Your response on points above doesn't really defend the situation for me.
1. They took away without really telling people. If you look back at the threads from those years you will know that was the case. So now they give it back because of customer "feedback". This is good but not perfect, as I feel they shouldn't have done it in the first place. If memory serves me right, the OTR price did not go down when they did this. May have even gone up that year.

2. Again that is just not good enough. If you think it is then your expectations are different to mine and there is no absolute right and wrong.

3. Dealers actually used to charge people even though the brochure said it was included. My dealer tried it and I showed them the literature. Again if you think that is ok then our expectations are different.

As someone who works behind a desk and don't know much about mechanical stuff, things like extended warranty does give me comfort. So when the recent warranty renew price came through and it was about 100% more than what was offered only a couple of years ago you know there is a change of strategy at the company.

To qualify this, I have only had BMW bikes since I passed my test and they have bought me great enjoyment for the purposes that I wanted them for. To go on holiday to see other parts of the world. My current bike has been pretty reliable taking me to morocco and back last year, and have only had the battery failing during my current ownership.

You pay what you gotta pay, we choose to buy BMW's, more expensive than most bikes, then bitch and moan about service, parts etc. I paid £160ish for a 600 mile service on my 07 GS at Vines, at first I thought f##k that's a lot, but hell no! I chose to pay 10k for a bike, I could have bought a Jap thing for a lot less. I love my bike and will pay whatever it takes to keep it running sweet.

Agreed, you really do seem to get what you pay for; I have been really pleased with the service out of Vines so far - although the art of the call back with that new development called the Telephone - could be improved!!

If you do spend this kind of money then you gotta expect a price for its upkeep.

I seem to recollect my Kwak ZX6 cost me for its first service - consumables only mind!

I had my first service done early March in Shipley-
Semi synth oil £26.96 +VAT
Rear drive oil £7.51 +VAT
Total bill £57.29
And I had to pay for a loan bike!!!

Completely agree with John.

I don`t know any vehicle manufacturer who gives a 1st service FOC. My Passat`s first service was at 18,000 miles:eek:. VW just reckon tolerances are so good from new that most engines don`t need any lengthy running in or checking for a while. I sell heavy trucks and the engines are so good in these things that they go 50,000 miles between services.

I think the issue here is not if it`s free but it`s the price difference which is odd. I paid @£100 at Clarkes and had a 1200S for the day FOC:D

You would think that BMW would have a standard charge but as all the dealers are privately owned they can charge what they can get away with. That`s called business in my book and IMHO, I would rather pay the dealer for proper job well done and I don`t mind him making a margin as long as the jobs good. It`s important for me to get a good dealer and I`m more than happy with Clarke`s.:thumb2

I think that is only partially right, more that until recently it used to be free labour and pay for the oil only. Now there seems to be a huge variation in charges.
It would be easier to swallow if the price of the bike had been held the same or even lowered but that has gone up as well.

It does smack a little of making hay whilst the sun shines, the brand is certainly very popular at the moment

The now closed Coopers in Reading - 1st service free, loan bike free, 2nd key free - just negotiate up front.

£80 all in parts, labour & final drive oil change also washed the bike for me :clap BVM Stroud.

Just had my May 07 1200GS serviced for the first time at Bahnstormer (formerly SPC on the A32 near Alton).
Cost was for materials only - £37.37 inc VAT.:clap And they changed the bevel box oil properly (wheel off, final drive unit pivoted 90 degrees down).:bounce1
Took longer than expected - but I'd rather they took their time than cut corners just because I'm sitting around in the shop. :Motomartin (Next time I'll book a bike to take out.):thumb2

Had my 07 GSA done at Vines last week - £163 total which included a £50 flat labour cost and VAT

Thing is I paid £149 in VAT at Vines last week. I don't understand why yours was £14 more...

And I've no idea if they did the final drive - there wasn't a charge and it wasn't itemised on the bill, so it's either FOC (unlikely ;)) or it wasn't done. (less likely still?)

Had my Feb 07 bike done at Bahnstormers for about £134 and I think that included the price of the loan bike to.

North Oxford is nearer to me but they tell you porkies about being able to pick the bike for servicing. After I bought the bike and asked them about picking the bike up for its service they said I lived to far away. And a loan bike was almost a 2 month wait.

Bahnstormers is the one for me.

My HP2 at Woolastons in Northampton was GBP99 but that included two 50 mile round trips to collect and deliver the bike - saves loosing a day from work :thumb

My first service (600 miles) on my 1200 GSA was free if I remember rightly although they did say that it would have cost £60/Hr for labour had I been paying. That was at Rydales in Cardiff who now no longer sell or maintain Bikes.
