Think i am going for a 2008 KTM 990 Adv, just been told the 09 onwards model has better fuel control & stops the bike being snappy can anybody advise!!!

I hadd a 2008 990 SM which was dreadful sold it after 3 months and had tried everything. The Adv is a bit better ,but I'd go for a Carb'd 950 ,my previous 950SM was a peach. The New ADV's are much smoother

I have an 08 ADV, had it over 2 years now. And commute on it every day through traffic etc. Came from a GS12. The bike is lively and just wants to go, and keep going. All I did was take out my ear plugs for a couple of weeks and rode it on the engine noise (if you follow) Unfortunatley the BMWs have perfect fuelling and then you come to a race bred 990 stomping V twin :blast :D
Some/alot of the guys fit a throttle cam and put a smaller front sprocket on (16 instead of 17) this puts the revs in a slightly different place and smoothes out the throttle a bit. The 15 minute idle trick and removing the secoundary butterflies :nenau

Me, I just got used to it and now don't even notice it. Slip the clutch a little on ickle roundabouts and thats about it.
Its like any new bike you have to get used to it, like the old Guzzies and Prilla 1000s.
What I also did was, change the front wheel size on the dash read out, from 21 inch too 19 this too put the revs in a different place for, 25-30mph which is the hot spot in 2nd gear, and also had the bonus of the speedo now displaying the correct speed instead of 3/4 mph over at 30/40.

well

well im on my second 990,both 07 first had power commander made a big difference, but the one i have now has the G4 throttle cam and 16 tooth front sprocket and its sweet,i can filter at low sub 30mph speeds no probs, the 09s have slightly better fueling and a different crank so slightly less vibes not that mine is vibey to me.....ride one cause iv had the 1200gsa and the 1150 gsa and this thing makes me laugh out loud when i ride it...........

I have an 09 990. It is better, not as good as the 950 on carbs. I don't bother with the fixes, just slip the clutch a bit and keep the revs up.

Test rode on '08 wanted to like the bike but hated the fuelling, it didn't even seem to like holding a steady 30mph in built up areas. However like some have said you probably may just need to take some time to get use to it :(

I moved to the Orange side in May... At first I loved it, then after I changed the exhausts it was taken on a trip to the Alps...... Worst bike I could have brought on the trip. The Stelvio was a chore.... Clutch slipping on every bend. fuelling was terrible.

MasterBaker on this site uses Super Unleaded in his, so I posted a thread on the UK.KTM forum to see if it made a difference. Very interesting response.

Apparently the bikes have a "self learning" ECU. Which needs re-set from time to time. A 15 minute tick over and the fuelling is sorted.

I thought it was a load of balls.... But it really transformed my bike. MasterBaker fitted different cans this month and was about to whip them off again until he did the re-set. We are both convinced it works.

From what I can gather, the un-molested bikes also benefit from this from time to time. A friend from this site told me last night he took a test ride on a 990 recently and walked away from it because of the snatching .. I told him about the fix and he's gonna reconsider.

Here's my link to the thread

Have had an 08 990 for just over a week, yes its snappy put if you listen to the engine i think its ok, must say the bike is fun to ride!!

i have an 08 990 with G2 throttle cam and have no issues.
Went to turkey and back in 2 weeks 6,000 miles.

If you want more control, especially off road, change front sproket to a 16.
this helps crawling without being snatchy and over fast.

KTM's just rev higher than BM's so throttle up.

I just bought a 09 990 Adv and its not perfect but I was expecting a lot worse after readibg all the threads,
Compaired to my VFR 1200 the bikes as smooth as silk now that was really bad 2nd gear wet roundabout and it was going sideways bloody horrid fueling

RC8 is the same + stalling for no apparent reason, bought a new one last year lasted 3 months and weighed it in :(

newer models have a 16t A as standard, changing to a 45t rear also helps a lot as does disconnecting the 2/3rd gear limiter - there is a thread on adv rider, involves disconnecting 2 wires on a connector
