I've just been told that my "built to order" 08 GSA has arrived....rather miraculously, 3 weeks early!!!!!!

Been given the VIN, but on checking I've found the build date is 01/07....!!!!

Now should I be alarmed at this????

Does this mean the chassis/frame was a job lot from 01/07 or the whole bikes is an 07 GSA with ESA fitted????

Now what???

Just checked it .. mines the same .. maybe there were already :nenau

How do you find out the build date from the VIN number?

If it was built that early .. how come it has taken that long to get to you? If that is the case .. then my bike would have been built in 06? :nenau

put in the last 7 alpha numeric numbers from you VIN and it tells you :

Vehicle code
Series
Model
Cat model
Production date

Got the site from another tosser on here...

why should it matter? assuming it has the correct bits and pieces, then resale will depend on the first reg date not the manufacture date.

I guess that BMW like other makers will have a production unit which takes bikes already off the line and adapts them to different markets ie "we've made too many for the States and not enough for Tommy, so Herman, take those ones over there and change over the lights and the ........... "etc.

Had a 73 reg Norton once that had been made in 71 - the Japs were just beginning to wind up sales effort in the UK so who then wanted a Commando.

Mind you , that is a point. When BMWs start to go from longe delivery times to delivered early, doesnt that tell you something about likely resale?

That is of course the $64,000 question. Has it got the latest bits? e.g. the latest ring antenna - assuming the latest one is an improvement of course :augie

Question is: How much confidence have you in that on-line VIN check?

That system relies on someone getting data from BMW and adding it, probably in batches.

Knowing how the assembled bike/car is awarded a VIN in almost every manufacturers system, I'd suggest that the on-line VIN checker isn't up-to-date, yet.

Most volume manufacturers operate on a 'just in time' assembly process. Outsourced items are delivered to the assembly-line just in time to be used. This is often no more than a few days. It saves storage space and prevents over-stocking if production slows or when changes to the product are made.

(When Ford still built Fiesta at Dagenham, the seats were made 45 minutes before they were fitted).

My guess is that 01/07 is a default date on the VIN checker until the data is made available.

As long as its not already old enough to be out of warrenty cos yoi'll be needing that :)

There is a number on tyres that relates to week and year of manufacture.

i.e 4306 is Oct2006

my R100RS tyres are 1404 front and 1785 rear

no wonder the handling is interesting

Whatever has been posted, I think you have enough information to approach your dealer for confirmation.
