Who has, or is opting for the Low 1st Gear option and why? I cannot decide and would like to hear the pro`s and con`s of this no cost option, at the moment I`m thinking of requesting the low 1st gear, but with road tyres instead of the off road tyres. John

i ordered it purely because i think first gear is too tall especially in traffic and when loaded up and in the alps and starting off on steep inclines.I tried a new GSA ON sat without the lower first gear and it was better than the 06 and so smooth but the lower one is only 10% lower

Save yourself the money and don't ride in traffic and avoid stopping on steep inclines! :D

I was thinking the same thing when I had a test ride yesterday that 1st was a little high and that I was dipping the clutch at times. As it is a £0 cost option then I was seriously thinking about it until I spoke with a dealer today. He said that it just makes the step from 1st to 2nd bigger. He didn't appear to be "selling" me the normal bike as that is all he could get as he said he could get either for the same delivery.

Are you sure you guys are not confusing it with SEAT HEIGHT? :nenau

:hide :D

At first I was thinking of getting a new GSA with the low first, then I realised i'd have to wait till May for it to be built, so it might be another standard GSA for me, just got to make up my mind what colour now:nenau

...Go for the low first gear everytime...I had it on my 1150GSA and miss it on my 12GSA which when I bought it in 2006 was not an option. Makes life a lot easier in real situations, traffic, off road and loaded up. It'll save your clutch and makes that 2mph roll very impressive....steady as she goes...ahoy there!

I have speckd it on mine. :rob I found that filtering with the 06 GSA, especially when touring with luggage, involved a lot of clutch slipping to keep things moving. Enduro first gear can only be an advantage. The rest of the time you are in first, for a very short time as you go up the box anyway so shouldnt make any difference coz the rest of the ratios remain the same.

If you're a road rider I'd specify the high first gear, which IMHO is very low in the first place (I've had bikes that red line at over 100mph in 1st). There is no problem at all with the standard first gear in traffic.

So you believe the dealer. :nenau

If anyonei stil inetersted , I finally got a perosnse form BMUU Information regarding the Enduro ratios:

Bot the standard and Enduro boxes have the same primary ratio of 1.737, and the same FD ratio of 2.91.
2nd gear in both is 1.646
3rd gear in both is 1.296
4th gear in both is 1.065
5th gear in both is 0.939
6th gear in both is 0.848

The only difference is on 1st gear,
1st standard is 2.375
1st Enduro is 2.600

The overall ratios then for 1st are 12.005 for the std box and 13.142 for the Enduro.

All ratios are between 1% and 3% lower than my '06 1200GS ( not GSA), the Enduro box is 12.6% lower.

Definitely worth a try, first feels too high both on and off road for me.
