08 GSA seat - how comfortable is yours

Can't comment on GSA but my stock GS1200 saddle just about killed my arse after 40 minutes. I had to resort to an Airhawk for my first long trip last year and I have to say that (once you have the air pressure right, very low!) it works remarkably well. However like others here I found it a pain to keep removing, it certainly made low speed control fully loaded and two up "interesting" for a short arse and it looks shite. The BMW low option was a bit better but eventually I bit the bullet and bought a Sargent for the front only, my Managing Director was happy with her perch.

The Sargent is brilliant. We did the World of BMW tour to Norway in June and whilst daily mileages might not be high (300 ish) the time spent in the saddle each day was considerable, getting on for ten hours one day. It took me a long time to convince myself that I should lay out £300 quid on top of the bikes price but I have absolutely no regrets now.

The 1200GSA seat is taking the longest to bed in with me that any seat ever has. I normally find it takes about 1k miles but the GSA is only finally beginning to be bearable after 3k. I can now manage about 6 hours a day - not great but getting there and a huge improvement from when I first got it. :-)

I haven't changed my seat but following a tip on this site I put the front of the seat on the high setting and the rear on low and it makes a significant difference to comfort.

This mainly stops you slipping fowards and prevents you having to grip with your thighs which sounds like what you are doing to cause the soreness.

That is my trick for long rides too +1000

My GSA seat is not very comfortable on a long ride but the rougher the road the more comfortable it gets..

I've sent it away to Custom Seats for a slight lowering and fitting of a gel pad. If this doesn't work out then it'll be a Sargent seat.

Whats that costing Wully and are they going to recover or reuse the original trim? Cheers.

It was £110 and the reused the original cover but they will recover it for you in a variety of materials I think- give him a call and discuss it, seems a friendly chap.

Ok, thanks. Let me know how it goes when you get a chance. :thumb

I believe that since sargent seat for GSA is lower that regular seat that could be an issue for taller riders like me , and i believe that the pillion sargent seat is less comfortable . Since there is only 15 days refund policy I'm not quite sure .:nenau

The standard seat on the GSA is dreadfull.I was loaned a Sargent seat on Saturday to try it, I was impressed. I rode the bike for and hour with no issues, put the standard seat back on and was moving again within 5 minutes. 10 minutes later my arse was killing me.

Who has said that the passenger Sargent seat is no good??

So i am not the only one who finds the 1200adv seat unsuitable for their botty.

I have just got larry the lamb out of retirement and fitted it, off for a 200mile day tomorrow, lets hope that helps!! Used it on the 1150adv.

Agree with most of the remarks about the GSA OEM Seat. It's a pain after 100km, for some even sooner. But I do like the way it looks, so instead of choosing a pricey after market solution, I found a seatmaker in the Hague who shaved off a couple of cm for height, added an extra layer of harder foam and covered the modified OPEM seat with the original cover. It took him about an hour to do all that.

The result is remarkable. The height is about 3 cm lower (that's what I needed), I can spend the whole day on the GSA now and the looks are unchanged. Costed me about 40 Pounds. :D

I'm just back from the Touratech event in Wales. Up till now I've only completed relatively short rides, but on the way back yesterday I was uncomfortable the whole 200m journey back. I think I must have short arms because I'm always sat right by the tank and if I try to move back I just slide back towards the tank eventually sitting on the twins as they get trapped with the forward motion:thedummy
I WILL HAVE TO INVEST IN A BETTER SEAT if I'm to enjoy the GS, a bit dissapointed TBH:(

I bought and fitted a set of Rox bar extenders which helped me a lot as I also have sort arms HTH:beerjug: Do a search (Rox risers) I posted a couple of pics.

I've got a 06 GS. Just did 2000 mls in spain (flew in, flew out, bike transported on truck). I'm 8.4, and had already purchased the optional higher seat (+40mm). I stil didn't like this, and hadn't lost any of my cornering speeds - still passing superbikes on the "GS" roads :-). Now (before the spain trip) i've used 4Ox20mm aluminium bars to raise it another 30mm (5mm indentures on top and bottom to keep the bars in place) and also used this to move the seat more forward (and close the gap with the fuel tank). My sitting position is great. Higher then on GSA (but on GSA it is suspension height, on mine it is seat to foot peg height), and as handle bar position did not change slightly more forward. I don't really have to tip toe at stops, but can't have two feet flat either. Nevertheless to me this feels great, and on GS style roads the side of my boots still scrape.
PSi also cut down my windscreen to get my helmet (Schuberth C2) in clean air. No good if you want to do 80mph plus, but great on "GS" roads. When driving easy i use my UltimateEar Monitors for music, before that was difficult due to this annoying windshield buffeting - no matter what position it was in.

cheers,

Got a new GSA in August and after just an hour or so both my wife and I were in serious pain. We have had both seats recovered and totally reshaped for £170 - sooooo much better.

Having originally thought that the stock GSA seat was made of concrete with embedded razor blades I now seem to have either squashed it into submission over the last 2500 miles or got used to it. Did a 250-mile trip last week (only 2 short stops) with only minor aches at the end of it - the same sort of aches you'd get from sitting in the same position on anything for about 6 hours.

My plans to replace it are now on hold until I see how it improves over the next couple of thousand miles.

I've found the GSA seat took longer to bed in than any other BM seat that I've had. When I first got it, I was in agony after an hour. Now its all day comfortable (well as far as any standard bike seat can be). Took about 3,500 miles!
