Apologies if this has already been discussed, but I have just joined the forum:thumb

I have a 4-month old GSA w/ approx 5,000 miles on the clock. So far Everything's been fine with the bike, except for an intermittent fault with the engine cutting out and stopping when I pull the clutch in, typically when riding in town and/or approaching a roundabout at very slow speed.

I took the bike to Park Lane in Battersea a couple of months ago, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. As usual, intermittent faults are hard to fix and as, a matter of fact, the engine has started playing up again over the last couple of days, after a few trouble-free weeks.

I suspect it might be the fuel pump, but I was wondering whether anyone has had the same problem (and has been able to determine its cause), before taking the bike back to a dealer. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the site :thumb2:

Both my 1200GS's have occasionally cut out in similar circumstances. Not frequent though, maybe once every 1000 miles or so. Never been bothered to do anything about it.

Yea I have an 08 GSA that has 6500 miles on it now and at about 5000 ish she started to stall whilst travelling at very low speed in traffic usually when I had just changed down from 3 - 2 or 2 - 1 and then tried to trottle on to pull away.
I told them about it at the 6000 mile sevice which was done only 3wks ago and they mentioned the trottle bodies might be out.
Any way she has stalled since (only once) so I anyilised my riding style and how I have changed it slightly since doing the BMW off road school. Where is this leading I hear you say. Well since doing the school I now only use two fingers on the clutch to change gear and I noticed that when it did stall it would not restart unless you pulled the clutch in fully. This of course is impossible using two fingers as the others (holding the grip) stop it being pulled in fully. So I wondered if this practice at low speed was indeed causing the stalling. So when filtering in slow traffic at low speed before changing gear I now use the complete hand to pull in the clutch and she has not stalled since. Could be just coincidance or it might in fact be why she was stalling.

My RT did it a couple of times and the GSA has done it 3 times. On the RT, it only happened in the 1st 5k miles and was fine for the next 20k+. The GSA did it a couple of times early on and then once at 5k. Maybe they grow out of it!

Mines same age, similar mileage, no issues at all.:)

My 05 1200 was cutting out at low speed/town riding. Diagnosed as a broken camshaft position sensor.

Sensor replaced (12000 miles ago) and the bike has never run smoother.

My 2008 GSA did it once the other day and wouldn't restart until I'd switched the ignition off then back on.

I'll monitor the problem but if its just very occaisional I'll just live with it

cutting out

hi shibuya, when your dealer unsucssesfully tried to diagnose your bikes problem, did he charge you for the privilage? mine did and i was quite put out by it. by the way mine still does this sometimes, usually when cold.
there is an awfull lot of engine braking on these bikes so a stall at low speed is akin to throwing the anchor out & could be nasty. :(

Hi - no they didn't charge me for that (assuming they actually did something about it...), presumably because they had to fix another fault under warranty (a tyre valve with pressure sensor that snapped in my hands - that's BMW quality for you).

My bike is fitted with an Akro exhaust, perhaps that's part of the problem. Obviously it's not the end of the world, except that it tends to happen when you least need it, i.e. in the middle of a busy junction or at roundabouts - I'll ask the dealer (perhaps a different one this time) to take another look when I bring the bike for its next 6K service.

Thank you everyone for your feedback!

my 08 GS with AKRO exhaust 3000 miles has done this the odd time dealer checked it out "said" cud find nothing through computer check; has happened me when slowing down for junction etc,,, when you dip the clutch and give the throttle a quick blip,,, :nenau prob a bad habbit i picked up off the old GIXER 1000 :D
