Hey guys and girls so at just over 1000 miles ago or a little over up a month i picked up my brand new GSA LC! what a beast she is (was), before i start i just wanted to make it clear i am in no way hating against BMW i had the previous model since new and never had a single issue it was a fantastic bike. Fast forward to Saturday just gone out for a days riding with 10 or so other various BMW's (mine was the only GSA LC there), we all climb a pretty tame hill i stall half way, fire up the engine and nothing no gear indicator no gears...... Oh dears. It was recovered (4 hours later) and taken to my dealer who have been great so far by the way. i get a call this afternoon saying they have found the problem. The clutch has exploded and sent bits of metal flying around the engine FANTASTIC! BMW Germany are now on the case as they want to see how a brand new bike can be defeated by a hill my grandma could climb! to give a bit of background the bike was in second gear clutch fully out climbing the hill no odd noise, smoke, smell anything and was making progress before the incident the only thing i can note is sometimes it wouldn't find neutral but i thought nothing off it, they seem to be thinking it could be a manufacturing fault or rider abuse. From the limited conversation so far we are talking new engine, rebuild or worse. I'm going to see my baby in the hospital (dealership) in the next few hours. I really hope BMW step up over this as the bikes treated like a princess. NEVER ABUSED guess we will wait and see. Wish me luck.

I love the irony of the 'ADV' sticker on the screen :D

Good luck, and I hope you get a replacement bike...

Which you could sell, & buy something better built :thumb2

It is possible you thought it stalled but the catastrpohic failiure stopped the bike,
with the multiplate clutch they are strong, at worst it would have been slipping with a high load,,
it will be interesting to know the extent of the damage inside and whether the timing chain is involved,,
Good luck ,,

Pulled to bits, hopefully they wont scratch the frame from reassembly ! dont worry if they do, they'll supply a tin of hammerite but you've gone from buying a factory built bike to a workshop built one .

Do you have a picture of the hill ? Big old beast off road , or was it a tarmac job ? Either way I'd be looking for a new bike with only 1000 miles on it

That's sad news but don't worry it is repairable, machines do breakdown....well apart from the old Honda 50's which didn't!

1x month old....oh dear. Money back or a new bike. Forget the new engine. Dont accept anything else.
If you bought a new telly for £5k and the screen went pop after 1xmonth you would want the telly replacing?
yes? Or just the screen? Dont let them of the hook. Sorry mate.

 There's no fucking way they'd be doing that to my bike in the same situation.:rob

Hang on, isn't that your bike having a Sunday clean?:P

Tis early days for you yet, yours to could look like that in the not so distant future but i hope not :( picture is standard strip down for engine replacement .

So after a trip to my dealer, an interesting conversation was had between them and BMW, they have told the dealer to replace the engine and sent it straight to germany for inspection as they want to investigate how the catastrophic failure occurred. It turns out one of the clutch plates has exploded and sent its contents around the engine, what was left of the plate was powder in a cup when I got there. We can only assume its a fault the bike has had since she was born :-( I'm asking for a replacement bike as apposed to mine being repaired so let's see how far I get. To be fair to all parties involved they have been great. BMW themselves have been very interested in the issues from what I've been told and are performing there customer service role very well so far, and the dealer has been awesome showing me the bike and explaining exactly what's happened as well as explaining my options and being very supportive. To answer a few questions the hill was off-road a gentle rocky slope near Alton in Hampshire, limited tracton but all the other GS's/Adventures made it up ok, and for roamer; I think your right, thinking about it maybe I didn't stall... Who knows..... Maybe I'll never know....

I guess my bike looks exactly the same, as it is at dealer for new gearbox replacement... week and counting.

there was a chap climbing a hill in the US who experienced this. Turned out to be a assembly fault with the clutch plates (either too many metal plates or too few , can't remember).

good luck.
