Of course things are not like they where in Germany since the Fuehrer died and top quality has been replaced by the mantra of making profits for the shareholders...But it is not as bad as you say.I rather have a new LC than the older aircooled shit that was good back in it's day from 2005-2012.THe quality of the LC is nothing worse or better than the former hex/camheads but the LC's are more reliable,need less maintenance and ultimately will last longer ! Why ? A watercooled motor stays cooler.The wet-clutch can take more abuse and the throttle bodies don't have to be synchronized anymore.The paint is nowadays water based which is true for all manufacturers.But compared to other bikes a LC boxer is more reliable and longer lasting than all the other crap out there nowadays !
I would say they are good and build for 10 year/100K miles total reliability which should make at least 2 buyers real happy.The origional owner and the next guy who buys a still great and reliable bike for 40-50% off...
What do you rather have than a GS - Some boring Afrika Twin with build quality that your spoke nipples rust when parked overnight ? Or a KTM or a Ducati which have tons of reliability issues ? Or a Triumph made in Thailand ? Or a Harley with 50% of the parts sourced in taiwan ? Get real !

Yes of course a Versys...The biggest pile of shit that already turns your stomach looking at it THe quality made in Japan is so good on a Z900 that the paint comes off after a few rides at the spots where your knees rub the tank and water cooling looks real good on a bike pretending to be a Z900/1000...The japanese are nowhere nowadays and boring as shit.I guess some old geezers still like them like some greenhorns think that KTMs are ready to race... Crazy days when even Triumphs are as fake as 3 dollar Joe Biden bills being 100% made in Thailand and 3 cylinder 800's and 1050.s often blow up prematurely by dropping valves...But in the fake press still bike of the year because of all the shiney double page advertisements...

Actually, I wasn't thinking about the Versys but you cannot deny that their engines are way more reliable than the boxer twin. Remember the early LCs which used to drop their timing chains into the engine, the cams case hardening wearing out, alternators failing, clutch biting points moving around, ESA suspension units that fail on a regular basis, paint on the engines corroding after 500 miles (mine), spoked wheels corroding and coming loose.
Yes, real good German engineering at a premium price.

I think "totally reliable" is stretching the truth a bit. You only have to read through this board to realise that they are not. The shift cam system on the boxer is certainly not tried and tested at present and given BMWs history, smacked up camshafts will start to appear when the shift cam solenoid and associated electronics fail.
But not to worry, BMW have a marvelous warranty to fall back on which is a good job because owners are going to need it. Extended warranties also good as it keeps the worried owners in the BMW service regime.
As for sewing machine Jap fours, yes, beautiful engineering that you can trust not to explode and leave to stuck.

Oh, and just remembered, what about the "totally reliable" brake calipers on brand new bikes leaking brake fluid all over those nice shiny showroom floors?

1bodger - at 98,200 miles I guess 1200GSA has been a bit of a mixed bag. There have been irritating minor faults over the years/miles and one major. The major was the rear suspension failed at 22,000 miles. The minor faults - Throttle position sensor failed. Aux lights handlebar switch failed. Exhaust flap failed. Fuel sensor strip failed (twice). Rear wheel speed sensor failed (twice). Sidestand cut out switch failed. Fixings and fasteners have not done well either. On top of that I've managed to fall off and break a few bits but that's my fault - the bike takes a tumble very well actually. My personal take is that those items and a few others are all minor but are an irritant as I feel they are quality issues and shouldn't really have failed (at least not all of them). Just my opinion though, others will disagree. However, that said the bike has done a lot; it's done what it was designed for and the engine is rock solid. Trips included pretty much all of europe in 2012/13. Buenos Aires to Ushuaia to Alaska (2014/15) 8 months. UK to Nordkapp and E Europe (2017) 3 months. UK to Australia incl. most of the Stans and Pamir Highway and China (2018) 8 months again. The America's trip and the UK 2 Oz trips involved an awful lot of very rough roads and more corregations than I care to remember (my eyeballs are still spinning). Additionally all these trips were done two up fully loaded including camping kit. I can't speak for the 1100's as I have no experience of them but overall my 2010 GSA was the right choice I feel for 2 up RTW travel. It also goes like snot off the back of a hot spoon on the twisties and handles really well when out for a blast with mates so it's been a 'yes' from me.

fair play, those are some impressive trips, great to hear anyone doing trips like this. I am biased having had a stack of TC's, but for me they are the best bike with the best engine BMW ever made.

There is only one thing that turns my stomach on here and that is whatever that twat Boxerlust bangs out on his keyboard! Yes, yes, yes, I know you shouldn’t feed the troll but he is just a wanker of epic proportions!

Oh, and for the record, I owned airheads in the 70’s and 80’s and loved them. Then I had a break but relented and bought myself a tarts handbag 2003 R1150GS. It was cleaned by me and maintained by Steptoe and it was lovely, however, during the 3 years that I owned it, it slowly disintegrated with the powder coating on forks, engine and hubs making a break for freedom. I went back to Japanese bikes and owned a Series 1 Versys 1000 for 5 years. What a brilliant bike! I traded it for a Yamaha Super Tenere 2.5 years ago. It feels just like a GS except it is reliable and has a brilliant durable finish. I still like BMWs but I probably wouldn’t buy one unless it was one of Mikeyboys bikes.
