I've seen the conversion kit in the Touratwat catalogue to convert my R80GS into a 100GS.
It looks very strong money

1.Has anybody on here done the conversion ?
2. if so, was it worth doing ?- they reckon a 10bhp power increase & it uses less fuel
3. Is there a cheaper way to do upgrade the engine ?
4. Would I be better just buying an R100GS instead ?

Yes

Yes
yes
Probably

Yes I did convert my bike with this kit. It transformed the feeling of the bike, much better torque. I cant realy relate to fuel consumption, but it is reasonable, between 40 and 50 mpg. But i did other mods as well over the years.
A cheaper way to upgrade is if you find a used R100 set of cylinders and heads, but then the carbs will restrict you so eventualy it might not be cheaper... The advantage of the kit is that it works well with R80 heads and carbs.

I'm sure that if you're not very mechanicaly inclined it will be better to get the bigger bike and be done with it.

How much have you seen the conversion for? This ebay one is €699 which doesn't seam too bad

A lot of r80 owners have done the conversion - often difficult to find one that hasn't been converted.

Probably want to do the head though while you are at it, seats to unleaded and the valve springs which are only good for 20,000 miles or so if ridden hard (so I'm told)
