looking for another bike after long injury and keep coming back to 1100/1150 how capable offroad are they !!!!! not looking to enter enduro just some gentle laning and big bike stuff  i'm expierenced off road been laning and doing enduro's last 20 years also ride trials but need a bike that can do everything or should i get gs 650/ africa twin

Hey Will...

The obvious question here is; "will you ever do more than green laneing"?

Mate... surely you have seen The Long way Round or Long way Down? They put the 1150 through hell and back! Of course if you want something more offroad orientated then you best head for the F650?

I went for the 1150 as I want to do road mileage AND some light off roading. IF i wanted to hack round all the local disused quarry's and local mud baths then I would go for the F650. :rob

Of course one of the biggest issues regardless of the bike is tyre choice! Doing distance AND wanting grip off road you either have 2 sets of wheels and tyres OR you find a tyre thats a happy medium....

Give us some more clues mate :thumb2

if your experienced off road id go for something lighter, more useable,,,
no doubt someone will be along to tell you a 11xx series will do everything,
they might, but its hard work, and that to me is less fun

Hi got trials bike for playing in quarrys and mud , need a bike for work and some trips and gentle green laning suitable for big bike , had good years doing enduro's now want to do some adventure type stuff i'm not expecting it to behave like my ktm 450 , but want to know what to reasonable expect them to do ,Was lent those mcboorman dvds when i was off over summer also watched terra circa and mondo enduro now thats better :thumb2

In the hands of Si Pavey and Nick Plumb at the BMW offroad school the 1150s were very able, there seemed to be nothing they wouldn't do (although the riders may have been choosing to do what the bikes could do).

In my hands, the 1150 is very heavy (when I pick it up, again).

That said, I've explored a fair way on dirt tracks and forded the odd rock-strewn river. I'd guess from what you say that one would do the job, since you probably have the experience and confidence to ride a heavy bike through things pretty sure that you'll still be on top by the other end?

I (re)started off roading on an XT660 and I struggled, I swapped it for a WR450 and loved it. Now I've got a bit better off road (not good) I've also got a GS1150 ... I think the GS is better off road than a lot of people give it credit for.

Ruts still scare me on it (slow is really hard work) but fast lanes are even more fun than the WR.

I'd say on easy lanes a GS is as good as anything, if you want to do technical lanes without a lot of effort get something lighter.

Whatever lanes you're doing nothing is better than a GS on the roads between lanes :toungincheek

Hey Will, the bikes you are describing are the GS1150, VL1000 Varadero, V-Strom, TDM 850 (cringe) etc etc... I'm sure you get the picture. I have owned a Varadero (briefly) which was great but has alot of fancy trimming to get ripped off and destroyed OR alot of JUNK to remove for roadside repairs etc.

I have owned the GS1150 since December 19th and briefly put it through slow paces off road... It's weight aids traction on the arse end, the torquey engine provides shove on tap when required. the height gives you adequate clearence to not worry about the terrain too much. COG is briliant and you dont even think about keeping it up right when being tracked by a ditch. Just point it in a reasonable direction and it goes where you want with bars wide enough to muscle the Titanic onto a different course.

Having said all that I wouldnt want to give the KTM guys any ammunition either! :augie so here are what I see as down sides;

Muddy bogs etc forget it unless you hit them and rely on BFI... (Brute Force and Ignorance)

Deep water... The air box intake is level with the bottom of the fuel tank. Granted how deep a water would you travel through BUT it does leave you open to getting flooded by your own bow wave!

Dropping it; all down to technique, strength and weight. "Apparently" the wide handle bars are used as a lever to lift the bike up. (scary unless you have the (GULP) £360 Magura bars) I estimate a GS on its side would stop at 50 degrees before resting on various parts of the engine or guards. When I dropped my ZZR1100 (also weighing a quarter tonne) (pulled away with disk lock fitted :augie ) it was flat on the ground and I could JUST pick it up without needing any magic cream afterwards! So the GS having many more handles and levers shouldnt be too bad comapred to other 2 wheeled devices.

Ooh... I nearly forgot... IF and only IF you like low speed technical stuff you will find first gear is pretty tall which means you're on the clutch! having said that the clutch feels alot like a car clutch and I didnt hear it complaining either? According to (certain) members if you manage to hump a GS clutch you will be in for some kind of award? :thumb2

Everything you say you want from a bike the GS does and very well too. I chose the 1150 because I really cant fall in love with the 1100 and my wallet doesnt stretch to the 1200.

Once (eventually when) my tyres turn up :( I will be looking for some green lanes and start pushing my off road skills which im SURE will end up with time to practise picking the bike up.

Turn your question around the other way and see what answers you get...

What WONT a GS do that I DO want to do?

I dont think you need to look any further but then im newly converted without disappointment and not a great lover of the very capable "orange" two wheel devices :augie

Come on Will, join the Bavarian Two Wheeled Tractor Club :)

Margus... aka Tsiklonaut. shows in this video what the 1100 is capable of.... all you need add to a standard bike are the frame protectors/hard parts. knobbly tyres and away you go.

Thats a cool video!!! Judging by the clatter it sounds like it would have done the bike a few favors to remove the paniers! Either that or that shaft drive bike has a lose chain slapping about!?!? :D

I doubt it.. knowing margus.

he's currently doing a RTW - 2up. the length of the Americas.. done. Australia coast to coast.. done. and is right now somewhere in Indonesia.

strange noises are part of the charm of these bikes. :thumb2

why give a story when a sentence will do:augie

by the way baz, you keep saying GS1150 ect, its a 1150GS, its like saying kawasaki 10zx
and the gs was a suzuki!!
FFS

hehehehe i think its a case of too much time on my hands and too cold in the garage to be restoring the GT380

I hadnt noticed I keep refering to the tank as a GS1150??? You are right? Normally im the perdantic one ensuring model numbers are refered to correctly! :augie Mate, I will do my best to get me number right... To be honest this is my first beemer and I found the model number method a little odd compared to the Jap stuff im used to...

Normally ZX400R ZX600R ZX900R So my Jap programmed brain says GS1150 R1150 etc....

Model type first then cubic capacity reference... (off the back of that statement please dont go into the fact that the 1150 is actually 1138cc either!) ;)

Germans, I love em!

Hey Elevensies, how am i doing at the one sentence thing??? :D Not good a hear you say? hahahahahahaha

I will do my best to refer to the R1150GS correctly from here on in.... (I have a feeling it maybe a beer related issue too!?)

Baz

your just too excited
it will wear

R= engine configuration ie boxer,

then engine size,

then model, GS RT S LT etc etc

just call it a 1150, we all get the drift. and it shortens your posts by a few letters:thumb
