1100 ABS won't engage,despite new battery...

I have a '95 1100 which I've had for 2 years now. During this time I've had intermittent issues with the ABS engaging, which I've put down to intermittent use of the bike and therefore a weak battery. Interestingly enough, after a long run (i.e.when the battery was fully charged) the ABS still did not engage after switching off / on, only after I did the usual 10sec diagnostic plug re-set.

However, now I can't get the ABS to re-set at all, despite installing a new battery and getting 13.9V. When I do a re-set, top ABS light goes out, after 10secs ABS switch released, both ABS lights come on and therefore all appears to be ok. Until I switch the ignition off /on and then the lights are back to flashing intermittently. I've also tried not switching the ignition off after a re-set, riding off instead, however the ABS doesn't engage, the ABS lights just stay on.

I can only assume a faulty sensor or loose connection, despite checking all connecting blocks. I did change the front sensor connector as it was broken and taped together when I bought the bike, however this was in the early days and did not effect a re-set.

Any advice or suggestions would be gladly received.

Sorry no real idea but I don't think you mention checking the gap between sensor and ABS ring.

There should be go/no go feelers in the tool kit, if not, use normal feelers or buy new go/no go from dealer.

Adjustment is by replacing the different sized shims.

The pre-98 (I think) bikes are the most sensitive to voltage drop (they reworked the ABS circuitry in 98 to get rid of this problem - shame it didn't work!), but it looks like you have that well covered. The best check is to do a ignition off/on after immediately after you've ridden several miles to get the bike up to temperature (so there's minimal oil drag on cranking) and when you know the battery if fully charged.

As Hambo suggested, check the sensor clearances - these have to be pretty accurate.

Inspect all the wiring for damage. SWMBO's 650GS's ABS stoped working after a minor fall - it turned out to be an internally broken sensor lead even though on external examination all looked fine.

If all else fails, take it to the dealer and have them hook it up to their diagnostic computer. That should flush out any faults.

I`ve got two 1997 1100`s and often find the ABS lights flash after moving off.

Both batteries are fine, and both bikes sleep indoors hooked up to Optimates.

Both bikes` ABS gaps are spot on,and there`s no damaged wiring.

Sometimes I have to stop and switch off, then restart, and the ABS resets.

I`ve recently discovered that if I wait a few seconds after switching on before I actually start the engine, and also raise the revs a tad with a quick 'blip' of the throttle before moving off, then the ABS sets itself each time.

Thanks...

Thanks to all for the replies. Took the bike to the only dealer in the country (Malaysia) whereby they diagnosed a faulty front ABS sensor. Gave me the run of their workshop to install the replacement sensor myself, and hey presto, no more blinking warning lights!

Now in Kuala Lumpur departure lounge enroute to Brisbane with the GS on board (hopefully!). With a 5 month trip around Aus about to commence I'm happy to have finally sorted the ABS. :)

Thanks once again, Hambo
