1100 air filter change?

I've just taken delivery of a new a filter element but unfortunately I've also got a full tank of fuel.

Is it ok to raise a full plastic tank in order to get the airbox lid off, or should I use / siphon the fuel first? I'm not sure now robust the plastic tanks are and don't want to break something (its fit to the silver 'behind the beak' trim piece isn't the best either - I don't want to make it worse )

You should get it with the seat off, try not to disengage the front part of the lid from the box, its a PITA to get back on.

I know the plastic tank is different to the metal.. but didn't think it was THAT different. so that it needs to be moved/lifted.

Plastic tank on mine, no problem.

If you have ape hands just undo the rear tank fastener and lift it up a bit.

Just been back into the garage and had another go. With the seat off, there's no way the lid of the airbox will tilt high enough to get the old filter out. If the air temperature probe (at least I think that's what it is?..) wasn't there it'd probably be ok, but without destroying the filter it ain't going. The factory manual says lift the back of the tank, so I'd assumed that was the only way It certainly looks like its the only way and I have the manual dexterity of a very dexterous thing (or so I've been told )

Hence my question about lifting the back of a full plastic tank....

it wont tilt enough on the metal tank either.. what you do is take the lid off completely. then replace the filter and replace the lid. - easy peasy lemon squeezy

The air filter lid is removable and not hinged as such. The hinge effect is due to the two location lugs on the forward side of the airbox body.

Just angle the lid up and wiggle while pulling back and the lid come free.

That's how it was on my '98.

Yup.
Or siphon fuel out... Or lift the tank full...

I just thought I'd check if lifting the back of a full plastic tank is a good idea (or if I was missing something and you don't have to lift the tank after all).

Guess I'll wait till I've used some fuel (won't be tomorrow though - chained to a desk )

I just thought I'd check if lifting the back of a full plastic tank is a good idea (or if I was missing something and you don't have to lift the tank after all). YOU ARE.

Guess I'll wait till I've used some fuel (won't be tomorrow though - (chained to a desk ) TAKES 1 MINUTE

There is absolutely no need whatsoever to move the tank. just lift and unhook the airbox cover. take out the old filter. drop the new filter into place. and replace the lid.

as the metal tank is a direct replacement for the plastic they can't be a different shape. so what works on a 99 bike.. or earlier will work on your particular antique.

I think you delight in making life difficult for yourself.

There is absolutely no need whatsoever to move the tank. just lift and unhook the airbox cover. take out the old filter. drop the new filter into place. and replace the lid.

as the metal tank is a direct replacement for the plastic they can't be a different shape. so what works on a 99 bike.. or earlier will work on your particular antique.

Well, you were all right (sort of)

Despite the warnings about the lid being a sod to refit, I had to take it off to get the filter out (it would just pop off with the tank in place).

So old filter out, new filter in, try and refit the lid - not a chance

Had to lift the tank in the end (supported by my missus - couldn't prop it without getting in my own way) in order to engage the lugs at the 'hinge side' of the airbox.

So I answered my own original question - you can lift a full plastic 1100 tank without damaging it, but 5' 4" girlies don't like holding the weight

The lid isn't hard to replace. It's simple. The trick is to engage the rear part first then press down on the front, which will click into place. On the other hand, if you try to do it the other way round........... Same on the RS too FWIW.

No need to touch the tank either for removal or re-fitting the air cleaner.

the front two lugs pop into place if you line the airbox top up carefully
