I agree with the last post - valve seals. My 850GS smokes a lot on start-up from cold (blue smoke) the longer it's left, even on the mainstand. As the oil consumption is negligible I won't bother replacing them until I have to. I changed from 10/40 to 20/50 but it didn't make any difference. It'll keep the exhaust from rotting from the inside.
