Hiya guys, took my 1100 out yesterday after my 1st clutch job,all was well until I needed to hitch a lift on the back of a RAC van:eek:.all the electrics went.turns out the wirings burnt out at the bottom if the ignition switch.is this common?was kinda cacking my pants thinking it may be something to do with my clutch job.

Don't know about "burning out" but ignition wiring just below the barrel is a common problem and a fairly cheap item from your local stealer, but normally it is broken wires not burn outs but I guess one could eventually lead to the other. (pun not intended)

A reasonably good quality toggle switch should do it for you. About 15 amp rating.

Connect the Red wire to one side of the switch and on the other side of the switch connect the Green, Grey/blue and the Grey wires.

Should do you for a temporary work round until you can replace the switch and harness.

:thumb. Thanks for replies lads, new harness on the way,and I,m off to halfords for a toggle switch.cheers

Question is Did you investigate this before you go "jury rigging" something

Maybe you trapped something when you rebuilt the bike??

Is there anything melted below the connector for the ignition loom??

You need to check or at least Get a decent 10 amp or 15 amp fuse in there just in case

The only thing I can think of is when I strapped the front of tank cover under the front of the headstock I must have disturbed the ignition wiring, the burnt damage was inside the plastic housing under the ignition switch.the green and red wires were also bare so maybe they've made contact with something and shorted out.

Just asking

Why do you think you need a fuse in there, when there is no fuse on the original switch?
If you fit a fuse, and this will be carrying the full load of the bike electrics, including the starter solenoid, it will be torture, probably with nusance blowing.
Most significant loads are already protected downstream.

You are right in what your saying myke but i.d rather a fuse blow than a new ignition loom.i.ll ride with a toggle switch and fuse till i.m confident the problem was down to me strapping the tank cover down.cheers guys happy riding.

Merely because he was going to use a toggle switch in an already damaged circuit
I had the misfortune to have to replace the loom because a twat decided to modify wiring with no idea what he was doing and melted about a metre of wires in and around the abs unit and surrounding area

I can call him twat as he is a friend and all he had to do was ask for help or advice

OK,looked over the loom, nothing trapped anywhere, seems the wires to the orange ignition connector are showing bare areas,I,m gonna strip the connector down and re sleeve the wires all the way to the loom, question is do these pins come out.

Yes they do, but:

you need a tool to do this.
A very thin piece of nylon pipe, for example, will slide down over the pin and compress the tag which holds it in place. You then withdraw pin and sleeve together.
However, if your connector is scrap, just cut it open.
