1100 clutch actuator arm upgrade

Having ridden thru Europe I reach calais and start boarding the ferry when my clutch arm snaps. Flipping thing, second time this has happened. I've heard rumors before that there is a supplier of an upgraded arm to prevent this happening. Anyone know who or how I get hold of one if these. I've ridden home clutch less.:tears
 
Good on ya. I had to ride through Cameroon with the same problem. Got to love starting off with a starter, thank fork it's powerful enough to lift off this huge bike even two up, and it's nice to stop desperately finding that neutral with the rather agriculturally sounding R1100 box giving decent entertainment for the surrounding crowds :rob :thumb

Anyways, you can properly reinforce yours like I did for couple of dollars in Africa (although finding an alu-welder was like searching for a Jedi Master in the rural Africa), before:

(it's actually reinforced with two longer plates from both sides that's hard to see through that utterly robust African weld, I had to grind some of the welding off since it started to scratch the gearbox casing). Now it's stronger than the original since it hasn't given up with the heavy duty clutch spring I use (also the reason why it broke in the first place).

Are these a quick job to change ie under 10 mins or more complex ?

By the book, you're supposed to remove the swingarm. So certainly not a 10 minute job.

However if you've got or can 'customise' just the right tools, and have double jointed fingers about 10" long then it can be done with just the rear wheel and shock off. I did mine like this using some ultra long needle nose pliers, a pice of welding rod and spanner bent 'just so'. Take a look at the bolt you've got to remove and replace - you'll get a idea what's involved and what you'll need.

In the end there's no harm I trying - if you drop the bolt between the swingarm and gearbox, you'll have to take the swingarm off anyway, so there's nothing lost :D
 
I had the same problem last year with my 1100rt. I replaced the broken arm with stainless steel one from Motorworks-had to take off the swinging arm but not a difficult job.

The saga continues,

Had the new ss upgraded clutch arm fitted, by the bike shop, however the clutch feels pretty much at the end of the bar levers travel. I've had a new clutch some years ago but not done massive mileages since so it's not gonna be worn out. Can I bring my biting point back to the bars abit does anyone know??

look up the procedure for adjusting the clutch travel, sounds like the shop may not have set it properly? or maybe they have and you are not used to the correct position ?

When they fitted the new arm, did they adjust the clutch properly?

Unless they know BMW's I'd bet they didn't...

ive found that if you cut a slot in the bottom of the bolt to fit exactly a long plain scredriver then one person can hold the assembly in position and another can tighten it through the thread hole on the top of the box saves a lot of time and trips to the off license
