A mate of mine took his 1100 to the dealer for a service, while doing the job the mechanic discovered a roughness when rotating the rear wheel. My mate was told about this when he went to collect the bike. The mechanic told him it needs a new bearing, so my mate left the bike with them for the work to be done. He later received a call from the mechanic to ask, "Would you like to pop over (60 mile round trip) to the shop and have a look at the crown wheel and pinion, they are scored and need replacing". The bike has done 45,000 miles and is never thrashed or abused, should he just get them to replace the bearings or bite the bullet and have the crown wheel and pinion replaced as well? Quote for the bearing work is £350, they never quoted for the additional work and parts needed to replace the crown wheel and pinion. My thinking is that a crown wheel and pinion will score through use anyway and shouldn't need replacing after 45,000 miles. The same dealer replaced bearings in the final drive on this bike at about 30,000 miles.

Also wondering if it's worth replcing it with a second hand unit from Sherlocks or Motorworks.
Any advice on this much appreciated as a trip to Germany is planned for next week.

My mate says he is about ready to swap the Beemer for an MZ.

The parts for a crown wheel bearing change are currently around £60 from BMW. It's not really a difficult job. A couple of hours at most for most competent DIY spanner-jockeys (allowing for time in the freezer).

He was talking about the crown wheel and the pinion, just get a s/h bevel box swap it in an hour no probs.

is it not a bit unusual for the final drive bearings to be gone again after 15,000miles? maybe that mechanic is trying to line his own pocket making work for himself!! just a thought, if crown wheel and pinion is knackered go 2nd hand not a big job to change.

May not be a big job to change but what about the special socket to remove the pinion bearing and the doofer to hold the final drive while you torque that nut-ring to 200 odd nm not to mention the checking of clearances for lash / backlash!

Bung bearing and seal and o ring in it and a dollop of molyslip for gearboxes and make sure that the gear oil is GL5 spec!

I do appreciate that but he says that the dealer wants £350 to do the bearing swap only and he's not convinced that the crown wheel and pinion need changing (for which no price is mentioned).
