Probably in the office. Again.
Could do with some advice chaps...

1994 1100 with 58k on the clock.

It's never had the finest gearbox, but it's started being reluctant to change up from third to fourth and fourth to fifth. The lever just won't push up and engage the gear. If I shift down then up again, it'll go in though. Declutching again and blipping makes no difference. It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough to be a royal pain in the arse.

Time to start looking for a recon box?

Just reading your post again, is there a gear linkage on your bike? if so the trouble could just be cured by a good clean and lube.

My box on a 99 R1100RT had a seal fail which allows gearbox oil to get down the pushrod tunnel and oil the clutch, it needed a gearbox strip to replace, The box was noisy in 2nd/3rd/4th and changes between 2/3/4 were not good.
He found a couple of rough bearings, and worn selector forks, he also said the shafts were not set up correctly?
Anyway he rebuilt the box and its much better, still very slightly noisey in 2/3rd (Normal) but much slicker changes possible, there will always be a acquired skill needed with these boxes!

I presume that you have cleaned and lubed all the linkages from the gear lever to the box first Mark? That can have a pronounced effect on the 1150.

Mark, Aiden - I have a cheerful feeling you may both be on the money. Off to see if anywhere in Burford sells WD40. If I wanted 500 different types of salmon-coloured corduroy trousers I'd be fine, but WD40 may be a little tougher...

Thank you. :beerjug:

Don't use WD40 try and get 3 in one or something that doesn;t dry off

The test is to remove the linkage and see if the lever moves freely on it's own if you have to push it or force it it needs cleaned

The ONLY real cure is to strip off the gearlever and remove the top hat plastic bushes and remove the corrosion off from inside the gearlever pivot

The other thing which I have seen once with symptoms like this is the roll pin just inside the gearbox on teh gearchange mechanism fracturing but you will notice excessive travel in the gearchange compared to another similar bike

Gearbox

Have the same issue on my 1100RT (72k) , only in my case it went tits up as I was riding -- Scriminger rebuild jobbie, plus I need a new clutch!!

Scriminger is highly respected and he knows his stuff so I sent it to him and now have it back but have yet to put the bike back together.

Thanks.

Ow - that doesn't sound ideal!

Well chaps, I'm delighted to say that reports of my gearbox demise were greatly exaggerated. Linkage off, cleaned and greased, and all snicking into place beautifully.

OK, I lied.

It's clunking into place like an early era Soviet tractor. But that's just as it should be on a '94 1100. :D

Thanks for the advice - another example of why this place is so bloody brilliant!

I'm sorry, mark ..but how long have you been on here ?

You should know by now that linkage is always the first point of call for earbox problems.

clearly you aren't paying enough attention and lusting over 3 wheeled devices and volvos....and women and wine.

well done that man... :)
