Stumbled across a few posts about gearbox problems on pre 98 1100, but mostly a bit over my head technical wise.

Can someone tell me the basics, like how common the problem is, what are the warning signs and are there preventative measures?

Got a 1994 1100 Belgium import and damn sure the previous owner (wjo had it for 10 years) didn't have any major repairs done.

thanks.

Kinda wish I'd have done a little bit more research before purchasing an older model.

Still, mine should be a M94 (will check later) and no jumping out of gear so all seems fine for now. Bit of comfort in his statement "Basically, I think there is no reason to expect problems with a gearbox that is working well". Personnally I find the gearbox fine, alot less clunky than some italian and jap bikes I've owned.

Don't worry about it, i have repaired both m94 & m97 trans some last forever & some as low as in the teens .
The main thing is good shifting so not to damage the dogs :rob

That depends on you - have you done anything like it before ?

It could be the selector forks or the dogs on the gears ?

You don't repair , you replace them.

As said it depends on you skills,i got a s/h box as a spare when my 11 had 50k on the clock (just in case) i have 90k on it & it's still as good as when i had it, so not all are doomed to fail early on
You need to heat the case on strip/rebuild

had a '93 box on mine when I first got it. No problem with it at all, nice and quiet, smooth cvhanging, no jumping out of gears. It had done about 18k when I had to change it, because I snapped a lump outr of the casing. (Don't ask!)

The '95 I replaced it with ran great for six months/9k, then started sounding like a bag of spanners immediately following an oil change. I had my suspicions, but it did another six years/55k before I confirmed them and found a knackered tapered roller on the back end of the input shaft. I only changed it then because it had started making a new noise; that and increasing paranoia about the fact that, unlike an engine, if a gearbox seizes, pulling the clutch in won't let the wheel roll again!

But I wouldn't worry about yours unless it starts getting noisy. Replacing the parts isn't difficult; I managed it.

Dave.
