1100 gearbox

Collective wisdom required....

Went to take bike for MOT, will only engage 1st and 2nd gears....which it does...and neutral...lever will not shift up from second at all....any ideas? Been standing for a year.

Ger does the gearlever move freely or is it a bit stiff Disconnet a wee ball joint and see how good or bad it is

If it doens;t get full free travel it sometimes doesn;t clear the selector fork cleanly

Lever very very stiff, now eased off and all replaced. I have tried it stationary in the workshop, and it still wont go up from second, but that may be asking too much from a BMW gearbox...it may be that I need to be moving before it will go up....and now its pissing with rain! We'll see!

You need to ease the back wheel round between shifts to get it to change when on the centre stand. I just lift the back of the bike and turn the wheel with my foot.

If you force it too hard when it doesn't want to go (without turning the wheel) you'll bend a selector fork.

Ger if you take one of the link ball joints off the lever should fall easily with it's own weight then it's free enough and as Matt says you sort of have to move the wheel back and forward to allow the shafts to engage

Gerry if you have luggage that makes the bike sit on the back wheel when on the centre stand you need a high tech tool to make the job easier.

Once the bike is on the stand find a stick about an inch thick and long enough to go under the luggage rack and wedge against the ground to keep the back wheel in the air. Easy to turn the wheel whilst moving the gear lever by hand after that. Makes cleaning the back wheel simple as well.

I had the same problem with the g/box, it wasn't easy to free the internals, it felt as though the selector forks were jammed even after freeing up the lever pivot. Good news is that was 15,000 miles ago and no problem since.

And....relax........

Once I got the bike rolling, there was a hoor of a savage clonk from the gear box.....ie even more savage than the normal savage clonk, and everything is working as it should....well actually, better, now that the selector lever is able to move properly!!
