1994, 1100 - Garmin 2720

I've just bought a Garmin 2720 from a member on here which I'm going to wire in tonight.

The Garmin power lead which came with it has crimped eyelets (in-line fuse on the live) so I assume the previous owner wired it direct to the battery. Obviously this would mean that the GPS connector would be permanently live. Is this normal practice or is it better to use a switched feed?

If switched is better, would it be ok to take power direct from something like the brake light feed without a relay (can't imagine the GPS draws much current)?

thanks
Matt

Should be fine, but dont wire it to the stop light!, why no wire it from the pilot light? bit closer to the bars and less wire assuiming the GPS qwioll go on the bars and of course you have your lights on all the time.

Hi,

I wired mine directly to the battery (Garmin 2610), Never had any problems with it being left on or with some idiot playing with it. I usually remove it when leaving the bike + you can use it without having to switch on the ignition - handy if you've stopped to search for accommodation etc. The wiring doesn't get in the way of anything and you don't have to remove the tank to wire it to the battery.

Regards

Good point - didn't think of that.

I think I'll wire it direct to the battery as you say - my only concern would be the loose plug when the GPS is removed. However I've noticed you can 'park' the plug on the Garmin cradle, so as long as I condition myself to do that there shouldn't be a problem.

thanks
Matt

Hi Matt, I'm with Dave - piggy back from pilot light.

Mine's an 1150, so I don't know what your pilot bulb-holder looks like.
Can't be too different. 2 male 1/4" terminals.
Brass piggy back connectors cost pence. They are a female , with a spare male. (this could probably be better described).
So all you need to do is fit the Piggy Back to your bulb holder, re-connect pilot bulb females, attach 1/4" female connectors to your sat nav lead,
check polarity and connect - up.

No cutting / splicing / bodging. (So can be returned to original)

Is switched (with ignition).

I did not want the cradle on my sat nav to be permanently live.
My mains charger gives 5V, the cradle must step down the 12V from
the bike.

Over time the +ve connector will fail, if there's a bit of moisture, if it's left permanently live.

+1

Much better if you can to take a switched feed from somewhere, I used the fused feed for the brake light. The time you use the GPS is likely to be less than 10%, leaving 90% of the time for electrolytic action to do its work with a permanent live feed.

But that would mean I could never ride with Tarka and use my Satnav :D (you'll understand this if you saw the pre-Llangollen discussions ;) )

However, it's a good idea and as I always ride with lights, having it switched with the pilot light is no hardship. The pilot light is easy to get to (just inside the headlight shell and has the same connectors you mention). I take it the pilot light wiring / fuse will take the extra load?

Decisions, decisions...

load will not be a problem.

Could always remove bulb for Tarka-stealth missions. Power would still be there. (I assume Tarka doesn't mind tail lights..)

Is this one of those 'in' jokes? Oil. That sort of thing?
