1100 GS Fuel gauge

Hi Folks next on the list,

Fuel gauge 1100 GS I was informed before I got the bike that the fuel gauge had stopped working, well low fuel light is on continuously aswell, which leads me to the question of are they controlled by relay and if so
which one ?

I have about two and a half galls of fuel in the tank. The manual says 4 litres
for low fuel light.

Can anyone help ?

It`s a float switch inside the tank,mate....with a 'wiper arm' changing the resistance on a sender unit mounted on the fuel pump/filter assembly.

It`s on the inner face of the right hand side of the tank.

Hi Tarka,
What do you recommend a new float switch ? I take it that this sends the wrong data and low fuel light emits constant.

Would have liked it to have been a relay LOL...

I'm sure I read elsewhere on here that the low fuel light is seperate from the actual gauge, and also someone said that it's worth cleaning the multi-way electrical connector from the tank on the RHS of the bike. Not that I've bothered doing it to try and solve my intermittent gauge which started playing up a couple of weeks ago on my 1100. Must do it some time. I tend to rely on the mileage covered since the last fill up.

I`d be inclined to remove the assembly and see if it`s free to pivot or not.

It may just be clagged up and sticking .... or a previous owner may have bent or broken the arm when refitting the assembly after a filter change.

If it hasn`t been done recently,it would be a good time to change the fuel filter,too.

Thanks for your input, I will have to strip it down and check
the connection block; then check the float switch as you recommend.

I see thats where the fuel filter resides.

Anyone near you with a GS- doesn't matter if it's an 1150or 1100.

park up next to each other facing in opposite directions, and plug your tank plug into the other bike and vice versa, don't forget to turn both bikes ignition switches on.
Then see what reading you get -saves you having to take things apart till you know what it could be .

will have to get to know someone with a GS !!

Slightly different question anyone know a good online site for BMW bike bits new and old?
I think the nearest dealers for BMW to me are about 35 miles away !!
