1100 gs

well i have bit the bullit not sure if i have done the right thing.
i have just been on ebay(oh my god) and purchased an 1100 with 76000 miles on it for £1550.00 its all meant to ride fine bit scruffy around the edges,but iam good at bringing things up to scratch. the only thing that is not working correctly is the clock.
what do you guys think?

I've had two 100s, an 1150 and two 1100s.

The 1100s are easily my favourites - do anything, go anywhere, carry the stacks of crap I lug about with no protest. Easy to work on, feel really well-built and put together. Love 'em.

And that mileage is barely run in. Ask Vern...

For $1550 you can afford some odd repairs but if it's a runner and it's rideable it's probably just cosmetic crud build up .... something all good 1100's aspire to

i sort of guessed i was doing the right thing. it is a bit cruded up but i am not bothered. its got full history remus exhaust and an aftermarket alarm.

First thing I would do is GET RID OF THE ALARM...

unless you have full documentation with it... know exactly how old it is, know how to completely disable it if it goes tits up and so on and so forth...

Great bikes, I love mine, just remember to check/replace the top hydraulic brake line, these fail without warning, oh and then ride ride ride

Just paid £2200 for a '95 1100GS and I love it already. Oil leak being sorted this week the off I go. She's done 60k, so should be about run in.

well i finally got it yesterday. fantastic,rode 170 miles home at a decent speed and i really enjoyed it.
it has full service history and lots of money spent including a new gearbox 30000 miles ago.
couple of issues the time clock after about an hour and a half just seems to keep trying to reset itself, and the bike seems to surge now and again. also the speedo over reads by about 5-6 mph is it repairable or do i need a new speedo ?
i must say i had a r80 g/s before this and was sorry to see it go,but this is heaps more fun. will try and post some picture tomorrow

Theres the answer ...having the valves and end float adjusted and throttle body balance will make a huge difference and you will see how much smoother it is....Mine rides like a new bike after having them done

As above, all GS speedos read over........it's not the speedo, it's the drive down on the front wheel, it's the wrong ratio

You can replace it with one from ...er I think it's the RT, bt I'm not sure......look at the details on the dealer's fiche and it'll give you the drive ratios....if the RT one is geared about 5% higher then that's the one.

Most of us just live with it though- as long as you know it's ok. (or use a GPS)

The gearbox casing area is a known weak spot- a hard part is a good move there to strengthen it.

Mine's done well over 100k miles now and apart from a battery needs replacing it's a great bike

Enjoy and get the missis out on the back- she'll find it so much more comfy than any other bike that she'll soon forgive you...and you paid the right price for it BTW
