Hi all,

A friend of mine with a 1100RT can't get the engine to run; we tested the ignition coil, fuel injectors, HES, realys, fuses, all;

One strange thing is that if he twists the keys in the ignition, not pressing the green ignition button and closing the sparkplug to the engine or frame, i can see some spark...

So i was wondering, could there be a short circuit in the wiring harness near the green ignition switch ? - it's just a thaught of mine

Anyone else got this? I also saw it on a 1100RS.

Thanks,
Dan

It is a pretty common fault for a wire to break in the ignition switch wiring on the GS models, probably the RT too.

any link for a tutorial or what to try? all i coud find for ignition switch was the key ignition switch, and nothing on the RH command buttons, where my suspicion is.

as I am thinking, the little round green button's wire goes to a plug, so... am i going to make any mistakes by unpluging that one and trying to start the bike by short-circuiting the appropiate bike plug wires? :)

sory for my english, i am doing my best.

I don't think he's talking about igintion switch wiring - He mentions the spark plug produces a spark when the ignition is turned on, and i presume it turns over but won't start.

Check if any fuel is getting into the engine from the injectors.

Fuel is getting into the cylinders, while trying to start the bike, i can smell gasoline coming from the exhaust;

However, i think i found the problem... it's the ignition coil; when i measured the resistance where it should indicate 13k ohms, it only shows 7k ohms; the other connection for the ignition coil is ok, it shows 0,5 oms.

What i don't understand is this: my coil has a wire connected to the bike frame; his doesn't; i tryed swapping the colis from my gs to his rt, but i can only her a short click coming from the starter relay i guess; his coil does not have this wire connected to the bike frame - it never had;

So... is his coil bad, only showing 7 k ohm instead of 13, or is this ok considering it's a RT not a GS.

Thanks,
Dan

i will get the injectors down tomorrow to see if they both spray fuel.

meantime, can someone answer my question about the coil resistance?

installed my gs coil on his rt and it's alll the same :( still not starting.

about the error codes, it could also point towards 1111 - CO pot - how do i test that without messing it?

since it is a variable resistor, i'm thinking it's going to be tested kind like the TPS, but now using the ohmeter scale instead of the voltmeter scale;

how much do i affect it i screw or unscrew the CO pot in order to test it?
i'm thinking that the resistance readings from the ohmeter should grow linear with the twisting of the screw, right?

does anyone know what pins from the CO pot should I read resistance from ? there are 3 if i remember correctly.

Thanks,
Dan.
