Does the oil temp sensor send any info to the ECU for fuelling, or is it just for the display on the clocks?

Mine works until it hits three bars then disapears (open circuit?) and as they seem to be about £50 to buy, if I don't need it, then I won't bother with it....

Thanks in advance.

Yep, it's one of the required parameters for EFI mapping to my knowledge. It gives richer mixture when cold (below two bars) and normalizes at 5 bars (running temperature).

So make sure it works, otherwise EFI will get confusing sensor data or just switches into the "limp home" mode :)

PS: when the count dissapears/reappears it could be also a faulty RID unit.

Usually a faulty engine temp sensor unit means relatively crappy running, especially when cold.

Bike runs fine, but I think/feel that it's running a little rich, always has since I've had it :nenau

Hmm..thought thats what the choke was for .. ???

The oil temperature sensor is mainly used for correct fueling and spark timing when the engine is cold. When the Motronic reads temperatures below around 60-80C it adds up to 15% more fuel. That amount tapers to no extra fuel at 60C on a bike with an O2 sensor, perhaps higher on an Oilhead without an O2 sensor.

I haven't measured it but the documentation shows that the fuel addition times out if the Oil Temp sensor malfunctions.

You could try reading the Motronic error log to see if it shows an Oil Temp error code 1223: http://www.largiader.com/articles/motronic.html.

Here's a link to some more info on the oil temp sensor resistance normally: http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthrea...0903&Words=roger+04+rt&Search=true#Post937070.

Didn't Stujw70 have this same issue recently, though his sensor was causing big problems with starting (which he eventually pinned down to the oil temp sensor). Check his posts. It was a useful story.

Looks like the advice to get it off the list is worthwhile

Thanks for the info, bike starts and runs normally (as far as I can tell, has always been the same since I've had it, no starting issues)
So it's an NTC (Very cheap on boilers, shame they aren't compatible :blast) and I'm guessing that mine goes back to a high resistance once the temp gets above three bars, or maybe my display is faulty??

Hiya,

I thought it was the oil temp sensor on the engine, but eventually turned out to be short circuit in the RID itself feeding duff info back to the bike.

Have a look at the engine oil temp engine end as mine had lots of corrosion and the copper washer had dissolved. Can you get the bike connected up to a GS911? Perhaps a fault code will help. Or failing that, just spend time cleaning and checking all plugs under the tank.

Ps my snag, was that it wouldn't start from cold. Once running it was fine though.

I stand corrected! So maybe the RID is the suspect...
