1100 or 1150

The 1100 has a fragile gearbox.
A perfectly set up 1100 doesn't run as smoothly as a perfectly set up 1150.

Thanks guys - very helpful.

Think I'll look for the best one (of either) at the right price.

I looked at the red 1100, but N Yorks is too far away!

Anyone want a swap? Mine's a 2005 650 GS with service history - nice bike.

Is that internally or externally? I read about the hard parts being recommended - is that where the problem is?

yes. gearbox hard parts are only produced for the 1100. These are/were standard on Australian bikes.. where the problem was first noted back in 94/5..

Touratech say.

The BMW R1100GS has several weak points which prevent enduro riders from riding the bike under extreme off-road conditions. Here is the solution.

Problems occur when the workload on the rear frame is too high, i.e. After
a jump or when riding with heavy luggage. The rear frame mount on the gearbox casing simply cracks.

Another weak point is the footpeg mount. Under extreme stress it may break the gearbox casing; i.e. when dropping the motorbike onto the footpegs or after a fall.

Might be interested in a swap - 1150 in Bristol

I have the both (GS1100 and GSA1150) and I decided to keep them because both are very raliable and excellent for my motobiking. I modified my GS1100 for enduro races (customised front and back side) and I have GSA1150 for my long onroad and offroad trips (Morocco, Albania, .....)

GS1100:
+ very raliable (cca 40 ths offroad miles withou any problem)
+ little bit lighter than GSA1150
- problems with gearbox (till 1997)
- additional mechanical gearbox protection needed (Touartech)

GSA1150:
+ 6 speed gearbox (short 1.)
+ higher alternator power
+ higher shocks absorbers

The both are very good choice and significantly better for offroad and for trips to the middle of nowere. I have real negative experinece with gs1200 from Morocco desert.

I have a -94 R 1100 GS with 115000 km under the waist.
I tried the 1150. I never saw the reason to upgrade.
Still haven't tried the 1200.

I re-fall in love with the bike every spring... :hug

Farkhas - give me a call on 01823-272069 or 07748-028894 about the possible swap!

Cheers!

I had a 240 mile round trip to pick up mine... to be honest i would've travelled twice that if an equally good one had turned up. Been guys on here who have travelled from scotland to the south coast to collect a bike. For a good one distance shouldn't be an object.. the ride home is (or was for me) sublime. :thumb2

How can Somerset to Yorkshire or Durham be too far? It is a pretty normal day ride for me, that kind of distance. Home to wherever in the morning, do the job, turn round and ride home again.

Today was Uttoxeter to Thetford, do bike photo shoot. Ride from Thetford to Bridlington, do another feature shoot. Ride home..just downloading now (23.30.)

Without the messing about, it is an easy ride. 534 miles it was today, plus two feature photo shoots. I dropped the oil and filter before I went this morning too, so not even an early start. Whats wrong with you? Ferret got short legs?:D
