1100 plastic to steel tank?

I'm just about to buy an unused, never fitted (so effectively brand new) steel tank for my 1100 to replace my existing plastic tank, into which I intend to fit my existing internals / filler etc (with new hoses and fuel filter).

Can anyone tell me if there are any other bits I'll need to get in order to do the transplant? Beak to tank rubber trim thingies spring to mind?

The right colour, brand spanky steel tank is available at a good price and my existing placcy tank doesn't fit right (apparently they swell with age and fuel absorption?) and has blistering paint. As I need to renew the fuel filter and the perished 15 year old internal hoses it seems like a good time to swap.

If you have this sort of crash bars fitted you may find that there might, just possibly, be a bit of a clearance problem with the welded flange.

Depends how many times they have been smashed into mountains and rocky river beds.

If you haven't, then just get the silvery thing and the black rubbery thing and carry on.

OK, after frightening myself slightly at the cost of a new silver beak to tank thing (£58 each at Motorworks ). Does anyone know where I can get hold of the required items second hand?

Anyone who has converted the front end of their 1100 to an 1150 beak etc will (or may) have these parts sitting somewhere. Just a shame you didnt choose to do this a couple of months back.. the parts were on Ebay.

This is starting to get confusing...

If anyone has a definitive answer to my plastic 'trim panel conundrum', I'd appreciate it. My problems (at least, GS related ones anyway) are thus:

Some posters in this thread have highlighted that in order to swap my '94 1100 plastic tank for a new steel one, I'll need different silver trim panels which fit between the beak and tank in addition to the rubber pieces at the back of the trim piece. This thread in particular seems to show this: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39784 - this picture in particular looks fairly conclusive:

However, I'm sure I've read on here (possibly from Steptoe?) that you only need the rubber trim pieces? - however I can't find the thread I read it in . This is backed up by the Max BMW fiche which only lists different black rubber bits - ('supports' on their fiche):

and looking at pictures of plastic and steel tanked 1100's it's clear that the tanks are different shapes and mate up with the trim pieces differently...

On plastic tanks, the trim pieces and 'front cover', the metal bit which carries the headlight and oil cooler etc, sit (not very well in my case) into a moulded recess in the front lobes of plastic tank:

Whereas on steel tanks this recess is different and the trim pieces and front cover sleeve inside the flange on the front of the tank lobes. So possibly the yellow tanked bike pictured above is actually correct and the 'untidiness' is taken care of by the different rubber bits?

Just thought - I'll probably need different rubber mounting 'bobbins' for the front frame too?

Any idea's?

If all else fails I guess I'm gonna have to PM Steptoe

why not just buy the correct rubbers for the trim and see if it fits ?

I did read that post and I did think that different rubber trims (and possibly tank mounting bobbins) were all that I'd need but other posts from people in this thread and others saying I need different silver trim panels too started me thinking? Seems that there are conflicting opinions

Just buy the rubbers and go from there.If you want to pop over when the roads are clear,I've got an 1100 with a plastic tank and one with a steel tank,so that should be a pretty conclusive way of telling whats different. I'll have money on the rubbers being different
