1100 swinging arm in an Airhead

Anybody done this? Does it fit straight in? Does it need a Paralever airhead driveshaft and if so does that fit into the 1100 bevel box?

Just messing with an idea :beerjug:
 
its about time someone on this forum built a real GS special.

I have some of the parts and had considered doing this mod.
If I remember correctly the 1100 shaft needs to be grafted with a paralever one, then there's the problem of the rear shock if it's mounted 1100 style then the battery needs relocating etc etc. A decent alloy welder could fabricate a mounting on the 1100 housing though.

The shaft mod seems quite straightforward if thats all that needs doing. I can run up another rear subframe with an 1100 style shock mount on it. Do you know if the 1100 swinging arm is a straight swap onto the paralevers mount?

I would be guessing as this was info passed onto me by my bikes previous owner who was also considering this mod.
I was under the impression that yes, it is a straight swop but I could be talking bollox. Again :)
Amongst the parts I had for the job is an 1100 shaft but an 1150 housing which is much better looking.
 
I have an 1100 swingarm sitting here - shall i measure the distance between the mounting points ??

Why do you want to do it Rob? Is it to improve reliability/getting away from paralever design fault?

At a guess :nenau ............. centrally mounted shock for more suspension travel and a rear brake that works.........

ie the Paralever rear drum for an Oilhead's disc
 
That's it - do it for greater suspension travel and a rear disc brake, as well as a slightly more robust drive shaft.

You will need to fabricate a central mounting point for the rear shock on the frame, and do the driveshaft graft wot has already been mentioned.

I have bought an r1100 rearend with the hopes of a modification such as this if the distant future. So anyone who takes the bull by the horns (so to speak) will get an audience from me. :bow
 
GS rearend

here is a set of pics i got when i thought about my project before i bought a HP2 , there is about ten in total , bike was built in holland, there are quite a few over there , normally at the GS meeting at Eastertime

Friend of mine has just fitted a 1100 final drive cover ( with the disc and caliper onto his paralever final drive - he had to machine out the inside to take the inner, and have the wheel respoked slightly off centre, so the spokes missed the brake caliper . Less faffing around
